California’s freeways can be a scary place for just about anybody, but one Chihuahua had a particularly rough day in traffic on the 680 Interstate Friday.

A passing officer stopped to rescue the pup after noticing the dog stranded on the freeway’s median in Contra Costa, just outside of San Francisco.

“This little dog needed some help off the I-680 freeway,” the department tweeted. “We’re glad he’s safe.”

Authorities used a protein bar to lure and then safely pick up the abandoned animal, according to NBC News. The dog was later taken into custody by Contra Costa County Animal Control.

A department spokesperson told NBC News that they weren’t sure how the Chihuahua arrived at the location, but noted it was likely abandoned by a former owner.

“As sad as it sounds, it actually happens pretty often,” he told the network.
