CENTRAL IRAQ
Sabbath another day at the office
By David Kamerman, Globe Staff, 3/31/2003
Some soldiers work out by lifting weights and doing push-ups, some dig their own foxhole, which they are content never to use. Many soldiers spend a good portion of their free time attempting to call home from one of the phones in the headquarters tent. Still others do small loads of essential laundry. But most soldiers pass the day as they would any other, 12 hours on duty, followed by four hours of guard duty, followed by off-duty time. Throw in two MREs (meals ready to eat) a day and a couple bottles of water from which they get their sustenance and you have a basic day in Iraq.
This story ran on page A26 of the Boston Globe on 3/31/2003.
Sunday, the day of rest, is much the same as any other day for the 27th Field Artillery, with the exception of a church service led by Chaplain Doug Gibson and attended by a dozen or so men.
