The following events commemorating the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks have been scheduled around Massachusetts for Wednesday, Sept. 11. Events are listed in alphabetical order by community.

 Amesbury 

Candlelight vigil: Mayor David Hildt will host a candlelight service with special guests Debora Hayes and her two children. Debora’s husband was aboard Flight 11 when it hit the World Trade Center. Candles are available at churches, the police and fire stations and other locations, and participants are asked to bring the candles to the service.  Boston 

State House commemoration: The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Governor Swift presiding over a ceremony in front of the State House that will include a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. At that time, the names of the 93 Massachusetts residents who died on Sept. 11th will be read. Beacon Street will be closed so people can gather. In the afternoon, Swift will hold a ceremony in the House chamber, where she will present several awards for civilian bravery named in honor of Madeline Amy Sweeney, an American Airlines Flight attendant who died aboard American Airlines Flight 11. The family members of Massachusetts victims will be invited to both events. The afternoon awards ceremony will not be open to the public.

Trinity Church services: The Trinity Church and other participants will create a setting in Copley Square for those who wish to come together in remembrance of Sept. 11. A participatory ribbon signing and a banner of hope signing will be available for written messages. A silent, candlelight vigil will be held in Copley Square in front of the Trinity Church at 9:30 p.m.

Unity gathering: A unity gathering will be held at the William E. Reed Auditorium in Grove Hall. Participants include: David L. Ramsay; Ernest Branch; Walter R. Butler III; Justice Milton Wright; Senator Dianne Wilkerson; Nation of Islam; Third Heaven Band; Captain John Duckworth; Lillian O’Neal; Frank Wilkins; Oscar Micheaux Theater Program; Denise Gaskins; Marilyn Andry; Chuck Turner; Robert Lewis Jr; Star of David Quartet; Ralph Cooper; and The Rev. Robert A. Washington. 7:30 p.m.

Comedy benefit show: An all-star show at the Comedy Connection featuring Don Gavin and Kevin Knox will be held with all proceeds benefiting the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund. Faneuil Hall Marketplace Middle Building, 2d floor, 8 p.m. 617-248-9700. Tickets $12.

Christian Science center: The First Church of Christ, Scientist, will hold an outdoor testimonial meeting on the plaza in front of the reflecting pool. Participants are invited to join the city-wide bell tolling. Another testimonial service will be held in the plaza at 7:30 p.m.

Free admission to the Children's Museum: The museum will offer free admission for the entire day. The Trauma Center will be providing free counseling.

Liturgy at Holy Cross Cathedral: The Archdiocese of Boston will hold a liturgy at noon at Holy Cross Cathedral, 1400 Washington St. Admission is free and open to all. For more information, call 617-542-5682.

"To Mend the World: Women Reflect on 9/11": Marjorie Agosin, Alexandra Johnson, Aviva Chomsky, Carol Dine, Elise Boulding, Jane Stapleton, and Laura Nakazawa will meditate on the human losses and larger political questions about US policies and the global climate of terrorism. Events at City Hall:

  • A Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be hosted by the City of Boston and Senator Edward M. Kennedy at Faneuil Hall, 11 a.m.
  • The City of Boston has asked all religious institutions and firehouses to toll their bells for 11 minutes at noon.
  • Lecture at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: A lecture by Eugene Richards titled "Stepping Through the Ashes" will examine New York and the country during a period of sudden and massive historical, economic, and psychological change. The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission cost is $5 for museum members and senior citizens and $7 for the general public. Students are admitted free of charge.

    Exhibits and free admission at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum: The museum will offer free admission throughout the day and extend its hours to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A number of exhibitions and ceremonies are scheduled:

    • Panels from the the 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt will be on display in the library's Pavilion from Sept. 11 through 30. When completed, the quilt will include squares for each victim featuring photographs and other personal items. For more information about the quilt, visit www.unitedinmemory.net.
    • The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, presented by Senator Edward and Caroline Kennedy last May to four representatives of the nation's public servants, will be on display. The award recognizes the courage and heroism of thousands of rescue, military, and other personnel who responded to the attacks.
    • A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m.
    • A free tribute concert will be staged from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m, featuring the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and the Kuumba Singers of Harvard College. The concert will be held in the Library's Smith Center. Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling 617-929-4571. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with overflow seating available in the library's theaters. For more information, contact Ann Scanlon at 617-929-1273 or visit the John F.     Free admission and concerts at the Museum of Fine Arts: The museum will offer free admission between 10 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. Visitors may take a self-guided tour created by MFA curators highlighting the triumph of the human spirit throughout the world's history. Musicians from the New England Conservatory will play at various locations around the museum. In the evening, there will be performances by Musica Sacra at 7 p.m. and the Boston Community Choir at 8 p.m. All performances are free. 465 Huntington Ave. 617-267-9300.

     Brockton 

    Candlelight vigil: A vigil in memory of the victims will be held at Lower Porter's Pond in D.W. Field Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Susan Panacho at 508-583-2045 or toll free at 1-888-583-2045.

    City Hall memorial service: The mayor's office will hold a memorial service from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Brockton City Hall, 45 School St. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Anne McCormick at City Hall, 508-580-7123.

     Brookline 

    Storytelling event for the elderly: The Brookline Council on Aging will host a storytelling event remembering and reflecting on the anniversary starting at 1 p.m. The Council on Aging is located at 93 Winchester Stdd. The event is free and open to all, but is geared toward the elderly community.

    Healing ceremony at Temple Beth Zion: A special healing service will be held at Temple Beth Zion from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The temple is located at 1566 Beacon St. The event is free. For more information, contact Marjorie Sokoll at 617-558-1278.

     Burlington 

    Sing Out for Peace: The Liberty Bell Chorus will hold a Sing Out for Peace at Burlington Mall. 7:15 p.m. 781-641-3106.

     Cambridge 

    Remembrance at City Hall: Police and firefighters will be honored during an event hosted by the mayor at City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

    Tolling of the bells: Cambridge educational and religious institutions will toll their bells throughout the city at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first airliner hit the World Trade Center.

    Candlelight vigil: The public is invited to gather at the Lars Anderson and Harvard Bridges for a candlelight vigil along Memorial Drive beginning at 7:45 p.m. Bring candles, flashlights or glow sticks.

    Free counseling and remembrance books: The Victims of Violence program will provide counselors and remembrance books in designated reflection spaces at the above events and at various Cambridge Health Alliance clinics.

    Prayer service at St. Paul's AME Church: The church will hold a "Concert of Prayer" for Sept. 11 victims starting at 6 p.m. The free event is hosted by the Central Square Minister's Association. St. Paul's AME Church is located at 85 Bishop Allen Drive.

    Peace concert: Harvard University will hold a Peace Concert at Paine Hall on Oxford St. Christopher Lydon will host this program of poetry, music, and political commentary. There is a $5 suggested donation to benefit United Justice With Peace. 617-738-8029. 7:30 p.m.

     Concord 

    Interfaith remembrance at Trinitarian Congregational Church: The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. with a pause for reflection at 8:46 a.m., when the bells of all local religious institutions will ring. Participants will then be invited to walk a quarter of a mile to the Concord Police and Fire Departments, where there will be a special tree-planting at 9 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. The church is located at 54 Walden St.

     Dartmouth 

    Memorial ceremony at UMass-Dartmouth: The Bristol County Sheriff's Office hosts a memorial in the UMass auditorium at 7 p.m. The event will be a solemn evening dedicated to the victims, survivors and heroes of Sept. 11th. The event is free. Please R.S.V.P. at 508-996-6704, Ext. 3337.

     Dedham 

    Evening of memorial ceremonies: Starting at 3 p.m., the names of all victims will be read out loud at the Endicott Estate. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a vigil walk from the Dedham School Administration Building on Whiting Avenue to the Endicott Estate. At 7 p.m., there will be a nondenominational service featuring music, readings, and prayer at the Endicott Estate. All events are free.      Dorchester 

    Ceremony at the Boston Institute of Arts Therapy: Guests will be able to reflect on the anniversary through words, poetry, music, and participation in a "Living Tree" workshop between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The institute is located at 90 Cushing Ave. For more information, contact Dr. Philip Speiser at 617-288-5858, Ext. 18.

     Everett 

    Remembrance ceremony: A ceremony will be held in Glendale Park (Everett High school in the event of rain). Awards will be presented to police, fire, and EMT personnel, and a “Tree of Life” will be planted in the park in honor of James and Mary Trentini, who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Corner of Elm and Ferry streets. 7:30 p.m.

     Haverhill 

    Interfaith remembrance service at Sacred Hearts Church: The ceremony, which begins at 7 p.m., will include Fr. Marc Piche, pastor of Sacred Hearts Church; Rabbi Ira Korinow of Temple Emanu-El; Rev. Harvey Joyner, president of the Greater Haverhill Clergy Association; Lillian Eaton Chaplain of the Haverhill Veterans Council; Mayor John Guerin; and Major Robert Klenk.      Jamaica Plain 

    Concert at Congregational Church: Avenue of the Arts Chorale will host the only Boston performance of the Rolling Requiem, a worldwide memorial concert conceived by the Seattle Symphony Chorale. The Chorale will perform Mozart's Requiem at 8:46 a.m. at Congregational Church, 85 Seaverns Ave. The event is free. For more information, contact Lori Dougherty at 617-353-3232.

     Lawrence 

    Interfaith prayer services at Holy Rosary Parish: A service in honor of the victims will begin at 7 p.m. The theme of the service will be "Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself" and will include prayers for peace and for the families of the victims. Representatives from the Jewish and Muslim communities will participate. The church is located at 35 Essex St.

     Lowell 

    Pentagon quilt on display at American History Textile Museum: The museum will offer a free display of the Pentagon Quilt, which is being shown for the first time in the US. The quilt features 50 panels dedicated to the victims of the Pentagon attack and was sewn by volunteers throughout the world. The museum is located at 491 Dutton St. For more information, call the museum at 978-441-0400.

    Other events: The city will have a military plane "fly-over" at 12:30 p.m. Starting at 6:15 p.m., the US Postal Service will unveil its new stamp honoring crisis responders. Representatives from the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Police Departments, EMT and Fire Departments will receive special plaques featuring the new stamp design. Following the award ceremony, there will be an interfaith prayer service. These events will take place at JFK Plaza by City Hall, 375 Merrimack Street. They are free and open to everyone.

    Ceremony at St. Louis de France church: A special service titled "A Lasting Tribute" in honor of victims will begin at 7 p.m. The church is located at 221 West Sixth St. For more information, call 978-454-0496.

     Newton 

    Free admission at the Jackson Homestead: Newton's Museum and Historical Society will offer free admission throughout the day and will host a "Wall of Remembrance" exhibit. For more information, visit the Jackson Homestead Web site at www.ci.newton.ma.us/jackson

    Ceremony at the War Memorial Auditorium: A service featuring police and fire department responders, speakers, musical performances, and an art exhibit will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Auditorium near City Hall

    Lunch for seniors: The Senior Center will offer an "All American Lunch" for seniors for $1.75 per person. For more information, contact Joanne Fisher at 617-552-7178. Moment of silence: Boston College will hold a moment of silence and designated areas of campus will be set aside for quiet memorials. 9:05 a.m.

     Pittsfield 

    Remembrance ceremony at Wahconah Park: All residents of Berkshire County are invited to gather at Wahconah Park at 6 p.m. to remember the victims. Everyone will have an opportunity to record their feelings in a remembrance book that eventually will be placed in a museum. Spiritual advisers from local churches and HospiceCare grief counselors will be on hand for those who wish to pray or talk about their feelings.      Quincy 

    Candlelight vigil at Veteran's Memorial Stadium: The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. The stadium is located at 910 Hancock St.

     Springfield 

    Breakfast at the Sheraton Hotel: A "Hero's Breakfast," hosted by the Springfield chapter of the American Red Cross, will be held at the hotel at 1 Monarch Place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. The breakfast will be a venue to honor 10 local heroes.     Interfaith communitywide service at First Church: The service starts at 5:30 p.m. and will include music, readings, and prayer. Court Square.

    Mass at St. Michael's Cathedral: Mass will be said by Bishop Dupre at noon. 254 State St.

     Sturbridge 

    Free admission at Old Sturbridge Village: No charge to visit the village throughout the day.

     Wakefield 

    Fund-raiser golf tournament: The N. Janis Lasden Memorial Fund Raiser Golf Tournament will be held. Laden was aboard American Airlines Flight 11. Proceeds will go to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Fund. For more information, contact Linda LeBlanc at 978-535-8793.

     Waltham 

    "Memory and Monuments": Brandeis University will hold “Memory and Monuments: Genesis of Counter Monuments and New Strategies in Public Art” at the Pollack Lecture Hall, Goldman/Schwatz building. The session will be held by James Young, professor of English and Judaic Studies at the University of Massachusetts at 7:30 p.m.

     Wayland 

    Lecture on Islam: The Islamic Center of Boston will hold a lecture titled “Islam & Modernity: Are the two reconcilable?” 7:30 p.m., 126 Boston Post Rd. 978-264-0429.

     Williamstown 

    Art and patriotism: The Clark Art Insitute will hold a program on American Art and patriotism, including a display of Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington. 12:30 p.m., 225 South St. 413-458-2303.
