VATICAN CITY -- Pope John Paul II gave thanks Friday for the spiritual, cultural and scientific advances made during the millennium but also asked forgiveness for humanity's many sins.
"What suffering, what dramatic events!" the pontiff said. "But, also, what incredible achievements."
The pope, wearing white vestments embroidered with gold and blue, was wheeled up the nave of St. Peter's Basilica on his new chariot-mobile, waving to the crowds of pilgrims, tourists and Romans. The frail, 79-year-old pontiff then led a traditional year-end vespers service of prayer and song.
"We give thanks to God for all that has happened this year, this century and this millennium," John Paul said in a clear voice.
The pope cited the discovery of America. But he also took note of the world's bloody conflicts.
"We ask forgiveness because, unfortunately, scientific and technological achievements -- vital for human progress -- have at times been used against humanity," John Paul said.
At midnight Friday, for the first time ever, the pope was scheduled to make a New Year's Eve appearance in his apartment window overlooking St. Peter's Square to give his blessing for the new millennium.
An Italian rock star was to perform in the square before and after.
