ST. PAUL, Minn.—In his speech to the Republican National Convention, presidential candidate John McCain paid tribute to a New Hampshire soldier killed in Iraq.

On Thursday night, McCain said he wears a bracelet honoring Cpl. Matthew Stanley of Wolfeboro, who was killed in 2006 at the age of 22, and thinks of him "every day."

Stanley's mother, Lynn Savage of Wolfeboro, gave McCain the black bracelet at one of his campaign appearances last year in New Hampshire. At the time, McCain appeared visibly moved by the mother's gesture.

On Thursday night, Savage and her husband, Jim, were at the convention as McCain's guests.

McCain said he intends "to honor their sacrifice by making sure the country their son loved so well and never returned to, remains safe from its enemies."
