Tuesday, Nov. 6 — As Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the Justice Department informed Director of National Intelligence James Clapper of the investigation. Clapper called Petraeus and urged him to resign.
Wednesday, Nov. 7 — The White House was first notified about the affair involving Petraeus. The retired general turned 60.
Thursday, Nov. 8 —President Obama, having returned from Chicago, was told of the affair. Petraeus met with Obama at the White House and asked to resign.
Friday, Nov. 9 — Obama accepted Petraeus’s resignation. News of the resignation broke before Congress was briefed. Broadwell’s husband e-mailed guests to cancel her 40th birthday party, scheduled for that weekend. By the evening, Broadwell had been publicly identified.
