Governor Deval Patrick appointed William “Mo” Cowan to serve as the interim US senator until Massachusetts voters elect a successor to John F. Kerry. Kerry formally resigned from the Senate seat he held for 29 years after he was confirmed as the nation’s secretary of state.

According to state law,a special election to select Kerry’s permanent replacement must take place between 145 days and 160 days after Kerry resigns from the Senate, and must be held on a Tuesday. That date was set for June 25 of this year. Take a look at candidates who may take over the seat after Cowan. We also review the people who were rumored for candidacy, but not running.
