President Obama quipped in a press conference Monday that the pies in the White House were so good they must have crack in them. He immediately regretted making that off-color joke.
The comments came as Obama honored outgoing White House pastry chef Bill Yosses, who Obama affectionately calls The Crustmaster. “We call Bill ‘The Crustmaster’ because his pies — I don’t know what he does, whether he puts crack in them, or, um, but,” he said to audience laughs. Michelle gently tempered her husband. “No he doesn’t,” she laughed. “There is no crack in our pies.”
Thanks to the wonders of replay video, we can actually see the moment the President realizes his off-the-cuff remarks probably were not the best choice of words.
After his joke, he stops, closes his eyes for a moment, sighs, and tries not to indulge the laughter, all telltale signs of an “I probably shouldn’t have said that” mindset. Let’s zoom in.
