One of the early goals of any political campaign is to define your opponent, often by assigning them pithy labels or by highlighting unflattering elements of their background. It’s one of the reasons Massachusetts Republicans are branding Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren a “militant liberal,’’ and it explains why Democrats are accusing Mitt Romney of lacking a philosophical core. But they are also firing off some of their most pointed salvos even before Romney has secured the Republican nomination.
