In the waning hours of the campaign, away from much of the limelight, small armies of volunteers are swarming the state to place lawn signs, knock on doors and wave placards at passing traffic. With no time to waste, campaign headquarters were abuzz with activity, with volunteers working the phones to make last-minute appeals.
