Casino mogul and Massachusetts native Sheldon Adelson has kicked $5 million into a super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich and could spend more if Gingrich stays in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Adelson and Gingrich have long shared a bond over Israel and Adelson has been a major financial backer of Gingrich’s ventures. Adelson grew up poor in Dorchester, the son of a cab driver, and is among the wealthiest individuals in the United States and the world, according to Forbes magazine. He owns a casino empire than extends from Las Vegas to Macau, a former Portuguese colony that was turned over to the People’s Republica of China, and Singapore.
