During his first run for statewide office in 2002, Timothy P. Cahill faced the challenge of differentiating himself from a rival candidate with the same last name, Michael Cahill. One of his four daughters, 10-year-old Kendra, came up with a catchy solution: “Tim for Treasurer’’ became the campaign’s new slogan. Eight years later, Cahill decided to mount a longshot independent campaign for governor. Attorney General Martha Coakley now alleges he tried to boost his candidacy with illegal TV ads.
