The mass shooting in Colorado caused a respite in what has become a bitter presidential campaign, with President Obama and Mitt Romney muting expected attacks on each other to instead deliver somber tributes to the victims. “We may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings. Such violence, such evil senselessness is beyond reason,” Obama said during a truncated six-minute speech in Fort Myers, Fla. But, he added, “We do know what makes life worth living. People in Aurora loved and were loved.”
