Text of DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe's speech

The 44th Quadrennial National Convention of the Democratic Party will now come to order. We welcome our delegates, alternates, representatives of the news media, friends and guests from around the world, and the American people to our deliberations.

Our task during the next four days is to demonstrate to all Americans that with John Kerry and John Edwards in the White House our nation and our people will once again be stronger at home and respected in the world. We are here to proclaim that the values of this country, patriotism, duty, honor, responsibility, opportunity, freedom, family, and faith, endure and are central to the ideas that we will offer the American people.

And, we meet at this time in this great city of Boston to nominate in a free and democratic process the next president and vice president of the United States. Delegates, alternates and guests, please extend a warm welcome to our convention band, under the direction of Steve Jordan.

Ladies and gentlemen, to deliver the invocation, it is my pleasure to welcome the Reverend Stephen Ayres, vicar of the Old North Church here in Boston.

Reverend Ayres.
