Text of Mitch McConnell's speech

Four years ago, Elaine Chao answered President Bush's call to help prepare the American workforce for the 21st century.

Elaine is the best Labor Secretary the President could have chosen for these challenging times.

And I would say that even if she weren't my wife.

Elaine came to America at age eight, after a month-long journey by sea from Taiwan. Her father worked three jobs to put all six of his children through college.

Her mother made sure they learned English and kept up their studies. From California, where she first set foot in America, to New York, where she grew up, and from Kentucky, where we both happily live, to the nation's capital, where we both proudly serve.

Elaine is a living testament to an America that invites the best from all over the world to serve as its leaders today.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Secretary of Labor, my wife, Elaine Chao.
