After a string of defeats on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney announced in a speech Feb. 7 to the Conservative Political Action Committee that he would be leaving the Republican race. The former governor of Massachusetts had huddled with his key advisers just the day before at his Boston campaign headquarters, with a spokesman insisting that Romney was in the race for the long haul. Romney announced his candidacy almost a year ago in Michigan, where his father had served as governor.
