On the younger side, Minnesota Governor Pawlenty is co-chair of McCain's campaign. US News & World Report recently quoted a source within McCain's camp that said much attention is on Pawlenty of Minnesota, who could help him draw votes in the Midwest especially with the Republican convention being held in St. Paul. Pawlenty's 2002 gubernatorial campaign featured very conservative positions on gun control, abortion and taxes.

The downside
Pawlenty held onto his second term by the skin of his teeth, possibly not boding well for helping McCain win the state. Also, some blamed Pawlenty's conservative tax policies as partially influencing the collapse of the I-35W Mississippi River bridge.
