Although he didn't win the 2004 nomination, Dean's career in politics wasn't finished. In 2005, Dean (left) replaced outgoing Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe (right). Dean received the backing of party leaders because he promised to build grassroots support for the party. Dean, however, didn't back off his hard-nosed rhetoric, declaring 'I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for.'
