Possible Kennedy successors
Ed Markey
Congressman Ed Markey announced today he would not seek Kennedy's seat.Markey has represented Massachusetts' seventh district, the suburbs north and west of Boston, since 1976.
Strengths: Power and experience. Markey has risen through the Congressional ranks and now chairs the Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. He is the second-longest serving member of Congress in New England. He has made global warming, a hot political issue, a focal point of his policy.
Weaknesses: Massachusetts voters looking to elect a new face will not find one in the seasoned Markey.
Markey chatted while riding to the top of Cannon Mountain for a "summit" on global warming.
