Ed Markey

Congressman Ed Markey announced today he would not seek Kennedy's seat.
Markey has represented Massachusetts' seventh district, the suburbs north and west of Boston, since 1976.

Strengths: Power and experience. Markey has risen through the Congressional ranks and now chairs the Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. He is the second-longest serving member of Congress in New England. He has made global warming, a hot political issue, a focal point of his policy.

Weaknesses: Massachusetts voters looking to elect a new face will not find one in the seasoned Markey.

Markey chatted while riding to the top of Cannon Mountain for a "summit" on global warming.
