Some Muslims at the Islamic Center of America use worry beads while praying. Others use clay tablets made from the soil of Mecca.

One theory of the tablets' origin is that they keep one's head connected to the ground during prayer, even inside a mosque. The other, more practical explanation is that the tablets act as a hygienic barrier between someone's head and a dirty carpet.
