Born in Idaho, the daughter of a science teacher, Palin captained her high school basketball team in 1982 and led them in the small-school state championship in Wasilla, Alaska. Nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda'' for her intensity, she played the championship game with a stress fracture in her ankle and sank a key basket in the final minutes. Two years later, she was first runner-up for Miss Alaska.
