Leave 'The Boss' alone According to Rolling Stone magazine, President Ronald Reagan tried to align himself with Bruce Springsteen in 1984: 'America's future rests in a thousand dreams inside your hearts. It rests in the message of hope in the songs of a man so many young Americans admire, New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen.' Reagan was already using Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.' as his campaign theme. He told the campaign to stop it. Springsteen also turned down an offer to endorse Reagan's opponent, Walter Mondale.
