Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., 81, was the driving force behind his sons political careers. He died Nov. 18, 1969, at the Kennedy compound, having suffered a stroke eight years earlier. In addition to his behind-the-scenes influence, he also served as the first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and as U.S. ambassador to England during World War II.
