Seven days after the now-infamous crash, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a two-month suspended sentence and his license was suspended for more than 18 months. In a televised statement made after his guilty plea, Kennedy said he was not driving drunk nor engaging in immoral conduct with Kopechne. Chappaquiddick likely put a damper on Kennedys further political aspirations.
