The 1963 assassination of President Kennedy was the familys first public, shared tragedy. More than 250,000 paid their respects as Kennedys body lay in state in the Capitol rotunda, and 1 million people would line the route of the funeral procession, which extended from the Capitol to St. Matthews Church, site of the funeral Mass, to Arlington National Cemetery.
