Kennedy, 77, died Aug. 25, 2009, at his home in Hyannis Port after a year-long battle with brain cancer. His death came two weeks after the death of his sister, Eunice, 88. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2008, shortly after endorsing then-Sen. Barack Obama for president. Doctors initially said Kennedys brain tumor was inoperable, but he later underwent surgery to remove part of the tumor in 2008.
