Obama hits $32.5m

By Scott Helman, Political Reporter July 1, 2007 10:16 PM

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois today revealed his stunning second-quarter fund-raising haul: $32.5 million, putting him $10 million above rival Hillary Clinton for primary funds. By any standard, that's a big, big number.

Not that Clinton's isn't: She reported raising around $27 million in all, including about $21 million for the primary. Her campaign had predicted last week that Obama would outraise her in April, May, and June.

"Together, we have built the largest grass-roots campaign in history for this stage of a presidential race," Obama said in a statement. "That's the kind of movement that can change the special interest-driven politics in Washington and transform our country. And it's just the beginning."

Obama, who raised about $26 million in the first quarter, also now boasts of 258,000 unique contributors.

Former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, meanwhile, announced today that he had raised more than $9 million. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson said earlier that he had raised $7 million.

OK, Republicans. Whaddya got?
