Romney spent $300 on makeup appointments

By Lisa Wangsness, Political Reporter July 17, 2007 06:45 PM

Politico has discovered one the more colorful items in Mitt Romney's second quarter campaign finance report: he spent $300 on make-up.

The campaign told the website that Romney had scheduled two $150 appointments with a California Company, Hidden Beauty, for makeup. Romney was only able to make one of them -- just before the Republicans' May 3 debate in Simi Valley, Calif. Link is here.

The site quotes Stacy Andrews, who made up Romney for Hidden Beauty, saying Romney didn't need much work.

"'He's already tan,'" she told the website. "'We basically put a drop of foundation on him … and we powdered him a little bit.'"

UPDATE:

In an e-mail, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said that hiring makeup people is standard for candidates prior to televised debates.

He added: "The communications shop hired a make-up person as part of our day-of preparations for the televised debate in Simi Valley. That charge was for $150 since they came to our off-site location prior to the debate.

"The second $150 disbursement was made for time that was booked by our communications shop but not used."

Madden said the campaign had planned to film an ad but did not use the time because of a schedule change.
