Clinton the 'scariest' Democrat, Republicans say

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 24, 2007 01:43 PM

The Republican presidential contenders spent much of their last debate bashing Hillary Clinton, whom they are increasingly treating as the Democratic nominee in waiting.

They are trying to scare voters about what a Clinton return to the White House would mean for taxes and America's strength in the world.

And now, she's also way out front in the Republican National Committee's annual Halloween-themed "Scariest Democrat" contest. (To play, click here.)

As of 1:30 p.m., the New York senator and former first lady had 91 percent of the vote. Barack Obama was next with only 5 percent. Her profile shows her high ratings from liberal interest groups and senators, while Obama's includes criticisms of his record in the US Senate.

But the scariest prospect for Republicans is that Clinton could very well win. She is leading national polls of Democrats and is also ahead of every Republican in hypothetical head-to-head matchups.
