Romney calls for more free trade deals

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 23, 2007 12:07 PM

Mitt Romney is trying to use the legacy of Republican icon Ronald Reagan to sell his economic proposals.

Campaigning today in South Carolina, Romney said that as president he would push for open markets abroad to help American workers at home.

Romney wants to extend free trade agreements around the globe, and called for a "Reagan Zone of Economic Freedom" that would bring in like-minded countries into the largest-ever free trade area.

The former Massachusetts governor also proposes improving worker training and education programs and creating accounts that displaced workers could tap into for their own retraining.
