Romney pushes family values

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 26, 2007 10:14 AM

Fresh off hitting Hillary Clinton for her husband's transgressions in the White House, Mitt Romney is stressing family values during three campaign stops today in Iowa.

In a package of proposals he is billing as "The Four Walls of the Iowa Home," Romney is vowing to push for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage; to fight online sexual predators with long prison sentences and lifetime GPS tracking even for first offenders; to convene a White House summit on strengthening families; and to oppose abortion by appointing like-minded judges and opposing taxpayer funding.

The former Massachusetts governor is relying on his policy positions, along with his picture-perfect family, to appeal to social conservatives in particular. But he is also fighting criticism that he has not too long ago held a different position on abortion.

Thursday in New Hampshire, Romney said the Clintons did not uphold family values in the White House, a none-too-veiled allusion to the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Romney is leading the polls in Iowa, where he has invested a lot of time and money and where he hopes a first-place finish in the Jan. 3 Republican caucuses will be a springboard for his candidacy.
