Clinton hits China again on toy safety

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 23, 2007 03:28 PM

On one of the year's busiest shopping days, Hillary Clinton pushed back today against criticism from the Chinese government over her condemnations of lead-tainted and other unsafe toys.

A spokesman on Thursday said that the Chinese government is "conscientious" about product quality and safety, blamed design flaws by foreign companies, and said that "any slander or exaggeration of facts is irresponsible."

In a statement issued this afternoon by her campaign, Clinton hit back: "This is the same government that just this month revoked the licenses of more than 750 of its toy companies because of quality control problems and ordered another 690 to renovate or improve their facilities, even as it asserted that 99 percent of toy exports met quality standards, And the Chinese government's watchdog agency reported earlier this year that 20 percent of the toys made and sold in China pose safety risks. That is unacceptable."

Other Democratic presidential candidates have also called for tougher steps, including restricting imports or sending US inspectors to China.

As president, Clinton says she would require independent third-party testing before toys are allowed on store shelves, completely ban lead from children's products, and improve the recall and notification system.

  1. Hillary clinton needs to put her focus on finding her own campaign (she is standing on Bill Clintons' campaign) and not try to win people over by being so wishy washy. We all know how she is and that she stands for nothing but control over anyone she can get control over. Hey hillary listen to a republican

  1. Way to go Hill! The reason why Chinese imports are cheap is because they cut corners on quality. If they had not, American products would not be so cost disadvantaged... and jobs wouldn't have left the USA too quickly, leaving many unable to retool thmeselves with new skills.

  1. In these troubled and dire time we live in, Joe Biden, to me, encompasses all that we desperately need for our nation:

    1) Intelligence
    2) Experience in ALL phases of government
    3) Strength
    4) Respect from world leaders
    5) Diplomacy
    6) Command of issues
    7) Solutions to problems that face our nation
    8) Honesty
    9) Integrity
    10) Respect and trust from his peers
    11) Respect and trust from the people who follow him
    12) an EXPERT in foreign policy

Joe Biden certainly meets ALL of the criteria above.

I pray and hope every day that Mr. & Mrs. America, the people of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina know in their hearts, that if we lose Joe Biden, we'll have lost one of the best Presidents our nation will ever have.

Please watch a video I produced to show my support for Senator Biden. If you support him, please send the link below to family and friends, and ask them to do the same.

  1. Would it make a difference if the lead-tainted toys were made in Europe or South America? The point is that a good portion of the money saved by 'off-shoring' manufacturing has to be plowed back into Quality Control and Standards. When a company outsources, it still is responsible for its products - it does not outsource that responsiblity!!! I think the senior management at Mattel and a number of other toy companies - and other companies as well - have either forgotten this or ignored it. Which is unacceptable given the high salaries senior management gets these days.

  1. Yeah! Lets all listen to republicans: Bush has been exposed as a liar and a fascist, Cheyney is nothing but a dictator wannabe, Craig is a closeted homosexual who cannot come to term with who he is, Vitter is a sleasy whore user, Thompson is in paradise at a gun show, 3/4 of the Alaskan congressional leadership is under indictment, Gingrich divorced his cancer ridden wife while in a hospital bed all the while touting his "contract with America" crap, Guliani has more ex-wives, Romney is pro everything when it suits him, Foley enjoys having those young male pages around. As for control, when an America speaks out against a sitting president and that president does everything in his power to ruin family members of the person who spoke how controling is that, when a sitting president has to lie and decieve the electorate to begin an illegal was how controling is that, when a sitting president instructs his people to omit certain details in a scientific paper to suit his own agenda how controling is that, as delusional as most republicans, as hypocritical as all republicans, as liars and cheats some republicans to say that we should "listen to republicans" your right we should and then we should read between the lines to attemp to get at the truth...
