Clinton, Romney snag big-name backers

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 29, 2007 10:28 AM

Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney each picked up high-profile endorsements today.

Clinton announced the support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the environmental activist and member of the prominent political clan. His father, Robert F. Kennedy, was a New York senator on his way to winning the Democratic presidential nomination when he was assassinated in 1968.

"Hillary Clinton has the strength and experience to bring the war in Iraq to an end and reverse the potentially devastating effects of global warming," Kennedy said in a statement issued by the Clinton campaign. "I watched proudly as Hillary won over New Yorkers across the state in her race for the Senate seat my father once held. Since then, she's been reelected in a landslide victory and proven that she is ready to lead this nation from her first day in office. Hillary will inspire the real change America needs."

Kennedy, chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper and President of Waterkeeper Alliance, is to campaign for Clinton today in eastern Iowa, where she is in a tight race with Barack Obama and John Edwards.

Romney, meanwhile, has the support of David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union.

Keene is an established major figure in conservative circles and should help reassure those skeptical of Romney's move to the right leading up to and during his presidential bid.

In a statement issued by the Romney campaign today, Keene said that "while I certainly can't pretend to speak for all or even most conservatives, the road that led me here today is one that many conservatives find themselves on and it is my hope that they will end up where I am today -- convinced that Mitt Romney represents our best hope for 2008.

"As this race began, I intended to remain neutral both because there was no conservative consensus candidate and because I know and admire several of those running for the Republican nomination who I believe could win next fall. In recent months, however, Governor Romney has emerged as the single candidate most worthy of conservative support. That's why I'm endorsing him and intend to spend as much time as possible in the weeks ahead convincing my fellow conservatives that if we are serious about electing a conservative president in 2008, it's time to unite behind his candidacy."

  1. I guess RFK Jr. is just a sellout. His father must be spinning in his grave watching his son endorse a fascist like Hillary.

  1. This is good and may be the indicator of who will be in the general election. When it comes to Nationa Politics, it is all about coordinating the armies. The people and organizations who have huse populations play critical rolles in determaning who is nominated and who is elected. The orgs can be religious, political, single issue, or social. What matters is their opinion of their own leadership in sponsoring the politician. Ordinary people are either too busy or too disinterested to do their own homework on the issues.
All together this is what has made America the greatest country on Earth.

  1. I agree--Romney is the best conservative manager. Once the America voter moves forward from his temporary confusion red herrings, like Romney's religion and conversion, and focuses instead on the actual issues, they'll see he has the best chance of winning. He won't be held back by skeletons in the closet that prevent a pro-family platform (guilliani) or lack of organization and funding (huckabee). He's fiscally conservative, avowed protector of conservative values, and has a history of just plain EXECUTING.

  1. Dear Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
You have seriously made a big mistake in thinking that she will end the war in Iraq. I believe her track record shows her true intentions, and according to her record she will only drag us deeper into debt, and drag on the war. I hate to say it but I have lost faith in the democrat party. So please Mister Kennedy, don't back a lying snake. It makes you look stupid.

  1. At least Romney has the backing of somebody that has a brain instead of some useless hollywood twits like the other candidates. It's good to see him be recognized as a leader that this country can be proud of. While I may not agree with everything he says or does, I feel confident that his decisions are well thought out and researched.

  1. This is in reference to the above post. while I agree that Senator Clinton may not be the most reliable, would-be "peace candidate" available, I feel it is excessive to bash the Democratic Party as a whole. We are not some monolithic pro-war force by any stretch of the imagination. There seems to be some other reasons that people take aim at the Dems, call names to the Kennedys and other non-mainstream politicians, and that, in my view, is what should be addressed by Americans. The anti-war sentiment is strong here albeit certainly not as ubiquitous as most of us would like.

  1. Mitt Romney is so shallow and disingenuous that I hope the christian conservatives make him the republican nominee. I have enough faith that the average american voter will see right through him and realize the importance of putting the white house into democratic hands.

  1. Romney, by far and away, is the best manager out of any of the Republican AND Democrat canidates. That is what you need to run the United States. It is a shame that RFK Jr. is so far off his rocker. Not a good thing for Senator Clinton.

  1. It is very interesting to see the harsh words written about Senator Clinton. Contrary to what has been written, she is an amazing individual who has risen to represent change and the beginning of a new era. All this negativity is more of the same stuff planted by the current administration. Time to move on and be a bit more positive people! We have a country that needs to be united and work together for change. Peace!

  1. Hillary and Mitt both believe in sticking it to people by just waiving their hands and making them buy health insurance. They both believe in torture. Neither has expressed that they believe there is any reasoned limit to government power. Both would have us in Iraq for the foreseeable future. Both have a history of raising taxes in underhanded and unfair ways. Both Romney and Hillary have spent the last year saying less than nothing and trying to make it sound good just to get elected. I'm not voting for someone who pretends to be all things to all people and then winks and nods at their supporters like they know what they are really about. The thing that Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton really have in common is duplicity.

  1. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr is not the visionary his father was. Robert F. Kennedy would be stirred by the dreams of Barack Obama and John Edwards, who are the natural successors to the man who showed America the abject poverty millions of our own citizens live in to this day. Robert F. Kennedy toured Appalachia and the deep south to reveal homes with no running water, no heat or electricity, children dressed in rags with no shoes on their feet. Schools that were little more than tumble-down shacks.

Robert F. Kennedy would find kindred spirits in Obama and Edwards who have worked hard for those with the least. Bobby Kennedy was ready to challenge the status quo and fought for goals that did not end with personal success, but with aid and comfort for those who needed it. He personified the quotation which has come to identify him best: Man's reach should always exceed his grasp.

Hillary Clinton brings to mind none of those ideals. She holds no special place for the impoverished, but seeks instead to enrich herself and family. The White House is not a place where Hillary sees she can do good for all, just do good for herself and close friends. Her goals is not to change the world, just be elected president, as if it is merely another entry on her paltry resume.

How telling that Robert F. Kennedy, brother of the martyred President, ran not on his brother's record but his own. How different from Hillary who wraps herself tightly the resume of her husband, assumes roles and titles held by others, inflates her unelected job into something unrecognizable, and -- being generous here -- fibs about her accomplishments.

Barack Obama and John Edwards will do just fine without the endorsements of the son, but the father must feel some disappointment that someone so shallow and self-centered received from the keeper of his legacy, the bearer of his name the endorsement which should have rightly gone to others far more deserving.

  1. Hillary might not be perfect, but then what better choice do we have???? I think it boils down to the lesser of all evils, and these republican boys are just the worst of all evils!

  1. People please state the facts surrounding your vitriol (especially those against Mrs. Clinton since so many of you have taking time out of your busy days to do so). It is not enough to state that she is a lying snake. please show me where she has lied and what type of snake based on scientific evidence that she is. Also, since I didn't know the Elder Kennedy, and I presume that some of you do, please indicate where you met him and how long you knew him, so I can know if the phrase "turning in his grave" would apply in this situation.

Finally, should the strong feeling that you have continue please put a platform together so that we may be enlightened.

  1. During the torturous eight years of misgovernment by Bush-Cheney, the USA has become the most hated nation on this planet, and everywhere its citizens are held in contempt. The Constitution has been destroyed; torture is the rule today and habeus corpus no longer exists--as the USA has become the Fourth Reich, the soars festering explode daily bile, coming from the character assassination techniques of those least qualified to lead: Obama, Guiliani, Romney, Edwards, and McCain. The future of the nation is long past, save for its waning like the other three Empires, unless there is a regime change from head to foot. Those who sit in Congress who supported the rape of the Constitution, regardless of party, should be defeated--starting with Pelosi of California.

  1. For those of you that have criticized Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for endorsing Hillary Clinton, I have one question: Where have you been living for the past 7 years? We need a President that will return fiscal discipline to the White House. This Republican was been a spend-thrift and has mortgaged our future for generations to come. You have to go back to a Democrat named Clinton to find someone who was fiscally intelligent and dare I say, conservative. Additionally, to all of you Democrats; you should not criticize her because she will not commit to removing our troops from the Middle East in one fell swoop, you should support her. Anyone who has studied international relations knows that a quick removal of American forces will cause a power vacuum that can only be filled by one power in that region – Iran. We must withdraw gradually and maintain a presence in the area to continue to fight on terror ~ which is real! I fear that you have all forgotten what happened on September 11, 2001. Although we now know that the information on Iraq’s treat and involvement with Al-Qaeda given to Congress and the American people was, if not fabricated, greatly exaggerated by the Bush administration, we can not forget what brought us to the region to begin with. Hillary Clinton could easily say she’ll bring the troops home immediately, that’s what popular and it’s what the other Democrats hope will translate into votes. She’s choosing to be a leader and tell the American people what the reality is, we may not need 160,000 troops in the Middle East, but we can not bring them all home and those that do come home, must come home in an orderly and gradual manner. Kudos to RFK Jr. for being a 21st century visionary; his father would be PROUD!

  1. Romney is a proven leader who gets results. You may disagree with his politics but those who work with him call him a "genius." Trying to call him "shallow" "plastic" "all image" are ridiculous attacks for someone who graduated with honors from Harvard and who has distinguished himself in private, public and olympic posts. Most of all, Romney is scandal free. If you look at the attacks at him, none are frontal. They all go after him at a tangent (he hired a contractor who hired illegals, he appointed a judge who let a man go without bail etc). These attacks show how desperate the media, DNC and the Clinton machine are. They can't lay a glove on him and it drives them nuts. Scandals detract from one's ability to govern and have bedeviled both parties for decades. I am voting for a man is scandal free and surrounds himself with likeminded leaders.
