Debate reaction to Huckabee
Mike Huckabee’s campaign is surging, and he may have won the “Mr. Congeniality” award from last night’s debate, but some political analysts think the former Arkansas governor needs to start taking his candidacy more seriously.
Conservative columnist and blogger Andrew Sullivan commented on Huckabee’s performance:
“(Huckabee) is easily the most appealing candidate for the current big-spending, evangelical, Southern Republican party. I don't find his religious schtick in any way appealing. It's glib in one area where glibness really is inappropriate. To say something like ‘Jesus was far too smart to seek public office’ may have a superficial appeal, but it is also a cheapening of Jesus' radical injunction to forswear worldly power and wealth.”
CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin, speaking on television after the debate, similarly portrayed Huckabee as appealing, calling him “the best debater in this group.”
But Toobin, like Sullivan, also opined that Huckabee’s attitude lacked seriousness, pointing to the candidate’s pledge last night to get rid of the Internal Revenue Service as an example.
Huckabee entered the race an underdog, but has since steadily risen in polls, thanks in part to targeting the Republican Evangelical base in recent advertisements. Most recent polls have him either tied with or narrowly trailing Mitt Romney for the Republican lead in Iowa.

What's wrong with getting rid of the IRS Go Huckabee!! Go Ron Paul!!! The only real truth telling grass roots candidates running!!!!
It's funny that a political commentator is now a theological expert.Just write about the political hype and spin that they all do and leave your religious bias at home....no one cares what you think about another persons faith or lack thereof. You're not that important.
Study the FairTax and the 16th amendment, i.e., the income tax, i.e., the IRS becomes irrelevant. We believe Huck is dead serious in his effort to end coercive, unfair, easily-avoidable taxes which only punish the productive and reward the crooked.
Where, exactly, did Jesus make a radical injunction "forswearing" worldly power and wealth?
This is a democracy and there is nothing in the Bible that prevents Huckabee or any other follower of Christ from serving in a position of influence. If the influence is gained in an ethical manner and used to serve God and man then Christ is honored and the world is better off.
Power and money can corrupt, but it is the love of those things and not those things in and of themselves that are evil. Jesus was in no way "cheapened" by Huckabee's comments last night.
Mike Huckabee earned my vote last night.
He clearly won the debate last night....so what if he's relaxed. Mitt Romney seemed like a Used Car Salesman who would say anything to sell you a lemon.
Toobin is right. Mike Huckabee clearly IS the best debater AND the best candidate running. Mike is soaring in the polls for a reason. I'm glad that he is getting the good press he is getting considering the tiny percentage of questions that CNN allowed him to answer. Candidates much lower in the polls were given much more air time. Does this reveal that CNN sees Mike Huckabee as a real threat both as a Republican candidate and to their poorly concealed liberal bias?
To think that Jesus would run for office, simply means that this person has not read the Bible. They could of phrased the question What DID Jeus Do, and the answer would have been the same. Jesus had a chance, but was smart enough to not run. God bless.

I have been watching Huckabee from the beginning and I like what I see! He's smart, witty, very presidential looking & sounding.
I'm praying and hoping he will rise to the top.
Huck deomonstrated his great combination of common sense, intelligence and humor. Hey.....He's one of us!
Huckabee is just the one we need in that big old white house.
This guy won't waste our time, money or dignity.
Andersons for Huck!

It certainly seems that Mike Huckabee is the best possible option for those of us who are evangelical Christians. The only electable republican candidate will be one who is not just a social conservative, although he must be that, but one whose conservatism is based on his faith in Jesus Christ. Its time to stop being quiet about that faith and to stand boldly and unashamedly in it.
I thought that Huckabee did an outstanding job in last nights debate and is leading in the top of the Republican party. He was clear and carried a strong approach.
Jason....You'd better wake up. Mike Huckabee is the best candidate...period. This man is quick witted...he can walk and chew gum at the same time(unlike romney and giuilini). He IS the only candidate that can beat Hillary because he knows how the Clinton machine operates from his Arkansas experience. The LAST GUY the democrats want to see win is HUCKABEE....that would be a disaster for them.
They can attach Mike all they want, the American people can see through all the political spin. People are looking for honesty and Mike Huckabee has it. I see Huckabee becoming the Republican Candidate weather the politicians like it or not. This Goverment is still "We the People" and the majority of the people will chose Huckabee.
Mike Huckabee is what America needs now...........what's wrong with a little humor to lighten the otherwise heavy load that the present politicians have heaped on the American taxpayer?
It was clear that everyone was gunning for Romney. He handled it very well and came out on top of every exchange with the other candidates. Huckabee got softball questions and, except for a brief negative ad from Thompson, Huckabee was largely left alone by the other candidates.
Huckabee is in trouble once people are made to understand that he did not govern as a conservative. I already can't afford my taxes, but Huckabee has shown that he would raise my taxes higher to pay for all the benefits he would give to those who aren't even here legally! He says he doesn't want to "punish" the illegal immigrants by not giving them my tax money, but how about not punishing ME?
Romney definitely won my vote.
check out Huckebee! Especially pt #5
SURE HUCKABEE & PAUL LOOK GOOD TO THE VOTERS NOW BUT
WILL THEY VOTE FOR THEM WHEN THE CURTAIN IS CLOSED .......
THE USA HAD A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE COUNTRY WHEN PEROT
RAN FOR PRESIDENT BUT THEY FAILED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE.
I AM NOT SO INTERESTED IN HOW THESE CANIDATES ARE GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS BUT WHEN. THEY HAVE ALL BEEN TALKING THE TALK FOR YEARS.
IF NO ONE HAS NOTICED , THE USA IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET.
IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE NOW , IN TEN YEARS YOU MIGHT AS WELL FORGET ABOUT IT.
Mike Huckabee is a man that I and my family will vote for as long as he is a good Christian man, and do as he say he will do the people of this country will vote for him. I am like thousand's people in this country, we are sick of the lies and stories we have been told in the past, We want a man that will back up his words that he say to the people of this country. I think Mr. Huckabee is that man fact!
Huck is the man! When will America wake up and smell the coffee? Political correctness has ruined this country and our value system. It is time the Silent Majority show up and vote!! I for one am tired of biting my tongue, while watching the liberals, special interest groups, ACLU, and other worthless organizations run the media and this country. Lets defend our borders, defeat terrorism, break our dependance on forein oil, open up our own shores and Alaska for energy! And finally, bring back the shrinking middle class. God Bless Huckabee!!
what a likeable person...with the intelligence to match...it feels right and cognitively he the right person to vote for. He will be the next president of the usa. mark my words.. paul r.
Huckabee Won My vote as well! I just want to say that I agree completely with Brent you are right on man. It is nice to see a pollatision stand up for what is right and not be afraid but be darring and relaxed. Thank you Mike Huchabee, as I said before you have my vote!
Why is it that we think that a born again christian like Huckabee cannot be elected, when over half the people in this country claim to be christian?
Something is wrong with that way of thinking, we are simply letting the media tell us how to think, we can elect Huckabee if we can get a positive attitude.
The real question is for the Preacher is would he follow the Constitution or the bible?.
This man does not even believe in Evolution? He is from the poorest State in the Country. We have had enough fo this type of person.
I don't know why the press gives him so much exposure. Their needs to be a seperation of chuch and state.
I wish the Bible Bangers would read the Constitution.
It is a sad day for Amercian to see the options we have to run the Country, no wonder we are 60 trillion in debt and the dollar is falling like a stone, our jobs have been taken offshore, We are in Empire in 135 Countries we have our Military in.
Foreign Countries are buying up our companies.
During the debate it is about issues the States should control. The bible has no place in the Govt.
I found Mike Huckabees performance in the debate quite refreshing. He stood tall and laid out as much as possible what he believed and stood for. With NO tap dancing, nor chest beating. When challenged,he stood up and defended himself and his record. I applaud him for standing up,most especially for Christian principles, which many seem hell bent on eroding. He has my vote

Huckabee,Its about timety someone with a backbone and abillty to lead with moral conduct and a sence of realty, Good job you can count on my VOTE
Anyone thinking Huckabee will govern as a conservative is sadly mistaken. Check out his record in Arkansas, don't just go by some sound clip you hear in a debate. Sure he gave a good answer about the Bible, but I bet most of the men on that stage would have - but they only asked 3 out of the entire group.
Huckabee might be a good debater, devout Christian, and "seem likeable" but is that all you want in your next president. Bush is a proclaimed devout Christian, but has he been the president you wanted him to be?
Check out his past record if you want the truth on Huckabee. Voting for someone based a few minutes worth of talking is irresponsible. Research everyone, then make an informed decision. Our future depends on it.
Looks like Huck is the only one who can keep the Presidency out of the hands of Hillary. I'm a democrat, but will certainly vote for Huck is he is nominated.
God sets up and tears down the people He desires to hold a position of authority. Pray for the will of God to unfold on this earth and pray for those who have yet to come to the belief that Jesus Christ was and is real.
Pray that the ones you love will believe and embrace the truth.
God have mercy on us the USA.
I thank Mike Huckabee for being a man of firm conviction. I fear that is a trait missing in the other Republican front runners.
I thank him for taking a stand against evolution. It amazes me that people can have blind faith enough to believe that life just happened, especially now that nano-biology has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no such thing as a simple cell.
If the gentleman from Scottsdale, AZ knew anything about the Bible, he would know that It advocates allegience to one's government. I think that Mike Huckabee will do what he says he will do. That would be a refreshing change.
Might I also remind Jim that there is still freedom of speech and religion (so far) in this country. Mike Huckabee has no intention of forcing religion on any one, but clearly his integrity would be a great asset for this country.
Go Huckabee Go!!!!!!
As quoted by Razorback D-McFadden after the great victory over LSU, " We got the wood right hura!".
For Jim in Scottsdale AZ
Here in the South ( Arkansas) we say:
"Boy! Where did you graduate from elementary and middle school?"
Work on your spelling, puncuation and grammar. That's embarrassing to the rest of your state reading it.
Toobin has some homework to do. The FairTax plan has 17x the number of co-sponsors ( http://snipr.com/fters ) in Congress that Forbes's / Giuliani's has ever had.
Prices AFTER FairTax would look SIMILAR to prices BEFORE FairTax - NOT 30% HIGHER - as opponents contend; competition would see to it. The FairTax rate on new items would be 29.9% (on the new, reduced cost of items because business isn't taxed under FairTax - thus lowering retail prices by 20% to 30%), or 23% of the "tax inclusive" price tag - this is the way INCOME TAX is figured (parts of the total dollar).
The effective tax rate percentages, that different income groups would pay under a FairTax consumption tax, are calculated by crediting the monthly "prebate" (rebate of tax on necessities) against all likely monthly spending of citizen families (1 member, and greater based on figures established by the Dept. of Commerce - a single person receiving ~$200/mo. A family of four receiving ~$500, in addition to family earners receiving their WHOLE paycheck). Prof.'s Kotlikoff and Rapson (10/06) have concluded,
(From study: http://snipurl.com/kotcomparetaxrates ) "...the FairTax imposes much lower average taxes on working-age households than does the current system. The FairTax broadens the tax base from what is now primarily a system of labor income taxation to a system that taxes, albeit indirectly, both labor income and existing wealth. By including existing wealth in the effective tax base, much of which is owned by rich and middle-class elderly households, the FairTax is able to tax labor income at a lower effective rate and, thereby, lower the average lifetime tax rates facing working-age Americans.
"Consider, as an example, a single household age 30 earning $50,000. The household’s average tax rate under the current system is 21.1 percent. It’s 13.5 percent under the FairTax. Since the FairTax would preserve the purchasing power of Social Security benefits and also provide a tax rebate, older low-income workers who will live primarily or exclusively on Social Security would be better off. As an example, the average remaining lifetime tax rate for an age 60 married couple with $20,000 of earnings falls from its current value of 7.2 percent to -11.0 percent under the FairTax. As another example, compare the current 24.0 percent remaining lifetime average tax rate of a married age 45 couple with $100,000 in earnings to the 14.7 percent rate that arises under the FairTax."
Further,
(From study: http://snipurl.com/kotftmacromicro ) "...once one moves to generations postdating the baby boomers there are positive welfare gains for all income groups in each cohort. Under a 23 percent FairTax policy, the poorest members of the generation born in 1990 enjoy a 13.5 percent welfare gain. Their middle-class and rich contemporaries experience 5 and 2 percent welfare gains, respectively. The welfare gains are largest for future generations. Take the cohort born in 2030. The poorest members of this cohort enjoy a huge 26 percent improvement in their well-being. For middle class members of this birth group, there's a 12 percent welfare gain. And for the richest members of the group, the gain is 5 percent."
It's well past time to scrap the tax code ( http://snipr.com/scrapthecode ) and pay for government the way that America's working men and women are paid - when something is sold.
Sorry Jim in Scottsdale..."Your Wrong" Our Goverment was built on Biblical principles. Maybe you should read the Constitution...then I suggest "The Bible" You've bought into a lie Jim,the lie is called evolution. Take the blinders off, you'll be happy you did.
Regarding Paul's comment: I hope you are right and Huckabee is our next President. He has everything it takes. It must happen!
A word to all those trying to down Huckabee; it is not working. Mike is honest and stright forward. He knows what he believes and why he makes the choices he does. The attempts to make Mike look bad by saying he likes to raises taxes (not true or the whole picture) and he gives special rights to illegal immigrants (not true), are not working. I believe the majority of people see right through that and hear the heart of Mike Huckabee.
There has never been a better man for the job!
Go MIke!
Mike Huckabee is like a fresh breeze of cool air pooring over your skin on a somewhat hot afternoon. He's the freshness after a summer rain. He's focused, he appears to have a small fire in his stomach but is waiting for the right time to have it grow larger, he has good intelligence, he looks presidential, he seems like someone I would like to call my President. Mr. Huckabee, do it, and get it done. This country needs you. RFF
Huckabee is a cool cat but I like Dr. Paul better.
This debate did not spend enough time discussing fiscal policy. We are decades in debt people. Can you hear the crash starting?
I'm not a Republican, but can say that I'm proud of those in the party that are true to their conservative convictions and finding Huckabee is the right man. George W. Bush and Congress strayed badly from those values and it cost them control of Congress and low 30% approvals for the President. Rudy and Romney are not conservatives and I don't trust any candidate on the left or right that shifts positions based on the election (also means no Hillary for me). Would Rudy been elected mayor of New York or Mitt the Governor of Massachusetts if they ran and governed as conservatives? No. Now Mitt has change sides on everything and disowned his state health care plan, while Rudy doesn't even pretend that he still is anti-gun and pro-gay rights.
I don't know if in this environment any Republican can win, but Huckabee would contrast clearly and cleanly from the Democrats and give the people a clear choice. Plus he energizes the Christian vote, which is a must to win. Granted a minister should hit the ball out of the park on a biblical question, but I thought his answer on is every word in the Bible was literally true was humble and brilliant. The others were just lost.
Don't be taken in by the Club for Growth attacks. If they were consistent, they would be running ads against Romney also, but they aren't. Remember the big state funded health care he passed while Governor. The lobbyists are simply protecting their campaign contributions which have already gone to Mitt and Rudy. Primaries begin in about a month and the big bets have been made and now they are scrambling to protect the influence they have bought/bribed in the two "front-runners". If that means attacking Huckabee with distortion and lies, they will do it.
The same dynamic occurred in the 2000 primary between Bush and McCain. Bush got all the early money, but McCain won New Hampshire and had the momentum. So the dirty tricks start, like the phone calls in South Carolina that claimed McCain had an illegitimate child. The lies worked and Bush won the nomination. Looking back now, how much better off would we be if McCain was President now. Bush's lack of experience has led to horrible decisions after 9/11 that I know McCain would not have made. Stay true to the candidate that reflects your own values and positions and don't settle for a compromise candidate. This is not a corination and grassroots candidates can win. I'm hoping for the same in the Democratic party.
The CNN YOU TUBE debate was in the pattern of CNN's political agenda. I can not stand to watch CNN very much apart from the financial news because their political agenda sorts the news to suit their preferences. It is a really poor way to do news. Europeans (I have lived in Europe for over 35 years) see it more clearly than Americans, perhaps. They choose other news over CNN for the most part. They instinctively know that they are getting politically adjusted news. It is really bad.
