Democrats jump on CIA leak case
Some of the Democratic presidential hopefuls are weighing in on the former White House press secretary's assertion that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney knew about aides' role in leaking the identity of a CIA operative.
Scott McClellan, in an excerpt from his upcoming book released on Tuesday, says he passed along false information to reporters about the naming of Valerie Plame Wilson. She and her husband Joseph Wilson contend the 2003 leak was in retribution for his questioning of the Iraq war. The White House has said the president never asked his spokespeople to convey false information.
Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut called on new Attorney General Michael Mukasey to investigate McClellan's claims and "determine the facts of this case, the extent of any cover up and determine what the President knew and when he knew it."
"If in fact the President of the United of States knowingly instructed his chief spokesman to mislead the American people, there can be no more fundamental betrayal of the public trust," Dodd said in a statement.
Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico bashed President Bush and promised to "never mislead the American people."
"It is a low point in our history when the leader of the free world fights to deceive the American public," Richardson said in a statement. "Rather than defend the Constitution, President Bush has bamboozled the country."

when Bush tells the truth that will be news!
Bush is not in the coming election. I would like to see the candidates run against each other, not a President that is not eligible to run.
wow. never saw this coming. this country has devolved into punchline.
Please let this be the death knell of this corrupt and destructive people.
Ooh, look, its official, a politian lied!!
Anyone suprised?
No?
Didnt think so.
And if the President can mislead the nation on a situation like this be rest assured he did the same thing regarding the Iraq war.
What truly amazes me is that, as far as I can determine, none of the major networks are covering this bombshell. It seems that once again the media is largely complicit in the sublimation of our democracy.
Simply: impeachment is long overdue.
Three Latin words come to mind: corruptio optimi pessima. English translation: The curruption of the best is the worst. IMPEACHMENT (caps added for emphasis) is the right thing to do at the very least.
You have to be kidding............." The pot calling the kettle black. " The Democrats are the worst going. Do they have such a short memory for such a famous quote as " I didn't nave sex with that woman " Get real , this is the nature of today's politics. It 's just a matter of whom you want to believe , and for me , the last Democrat I believed was JFK, and he had dirty laundr in his closet..
From the start Bush was Crooked...His tenure was more focussed on circumventing laws...bending rules and appeasing big biz...He rewrote the book on dishonesty...9/11 was a tool used by him for his crooked intents...Patriotism another factor...played on by Bush for sinister goals...SUPRESSION. of THE TRUTH....We will continue suffering the consequences of his misdeeds...The world at large will make us pay...Oil prices ..weak dollar..Chinese dominance , and lack of respect..Our leader represents us...BUSH...Well that says it all...No one has the will to Impeach him...Clinton's BJ was less damaging than Bush's Lies ,coverups and ineptitude...He employed only Yes men to his cabinet...and YES they are just as liable for this mess.
lot of jumping going on there!
Rove and Bush have a history of "getting even" - when Joe Wilson's article hit the paper Rove, Bush and Cheney, like the petulant school yard bully hit back.
You could most likely hear the high 5's as they destroyed Valerie Wilson's career.
The constitution be damned - all they cared about was throwing water on the firestorm Joe Wilson created. Traitors all - they should be tried for treason.
It's typical that two of the least "desirable" of the Democrat candidates would jump- on the ongoing non-story of Valerie Plame. A real Presidential candidate would have the ability to inspire with his thoughts and words. Instead, as is typical of all the Democrat's, they cry "Mommy, Look what Geoge and Richy did?" Grow up and get a real issue, not a non-issue.
Why is it that the drive by media "pooh, poohs," tell all books about the Clinton's, but takes a book by McClellan at face value? Let me answer my own question. Because the Globe and other media outlets aren't interested in exposing the truth, only what serves their agenda.
Why is Senator Dodd calling on AG Mukasey to investigate McClellan's claims?
Given the nature of the accusation, how can this investigation be left to the executive branch? Shouldn't this better be left to an independent prosecutor?
A lot of people knew this years ago, When are the people of this country going to wake up? The worse thing we can do is nothing., and this is what we are go at. NOTHING!
What justification could pssibly used to believe anything coming from this administration?
WMD? Ties to OBLaden? Nukes? Abrahmoff, Delay, Ken Lay, Cocain, DUIs, ROVE, Nat. Guard service, financial records, wiretap, torture, Gonzales...etc.
With the amount of power and money involved, the Bush-Murdoch group leaves little to chance. Liers need secrets.
Fitzgerald knew when he took this case that Richard Armitage was the leak and not Libby. More poltical fishing for non issues when this country has real issues to deal with; immigration, energy, war, taxes, etc...etc...
When Clinton lied ... nobody died
The President and the VP are the only two men in America who can order the outing of a CIA spy and not be executed/imprisoned for Treason. And they knew it when they did it. And they did it for revenge, and to lie us into a war.
That's not technically Treason, but it is impeachable. And it is something everyone should remember about the Republican Party when voting time comes. Because Republicans let it happen, by backing Bush all this time. And they'll do it again. Anybody who doesn't think Republicans like Hastert are up to their eyeballs in Treasonous behavior should ask themselves why he's retiring now, and who Sibel Edmonds is.
Bush/Cheney should be investigated for lying to America, and McClellan's statement pans out, they should be removed from office and held to account. These guys haven't earned the honor of leaving office in the normal way. We have a drunk and a chimp in the White House, and Republicans and Republican voters gave them to us.
Bush and the Clintons have a lot in common apparently.
Michael Mcdonell, do you really think that lying about having an adulterous affair is the same as lying about the outing of a CIA agent. You are an absolute moron if you think that the two are even remote close.
Sex in the Oval office (and then to lie about it) sent the Republicans into an Impeachment rage (maybe because it wasn't in the required restroom stall).
However, TREASON by our President, Vice President and their staffers apparently does not cause any unease by the Republican loud mouth moral idiots.
Much thanks to all those who voted for W. Real smart. I hope your next "beer buddy" doesn't get elected as dog catcher.
Watchdogg: "... the ongoing non-story of Valerie Plame."
Non-story? Do you know something that the Wilsons, Patrick Fitzgerald, the Justice Dept. and the CIA don't? You should probably share your info with them. You know, in the interest of justice and all that.
And the White House Crew continues to laugh all the way to bank..........
IMHO, Dodd is a moron who is studying to be an idiot and is flunking the course. Nobody with more than four brain cells still gives a damn about this story. But, keeping the story alive does serve a useful purpose: it diverts otherwise potentially dangerous liberal traitors from causing more damage elsewhere. So, keep beating the dead horse. Richardson cannot even keep his home state safe from Mexican drug lords. I guess his great foreign policy idea is to surrender to Mexico before a war is even declared? What happened to the Democrats over the last fifty years? Why can't you guys produce a candidate like the former greats John F. Kennedy and Harry Truman?
The Republican loyalists always ignore the nature of consequences to make
their feeble points. Clinton lying about infidelity in no way compares to
elected officials; the President and Vice President, knowingly blowing the cover
of a covert CIA agent. Whether she was deep cover, shallow cover, or a
CIA chef is immaterial. It's illegal and counterproductive to liberty.
Nevermind Newt Gingrich's infidelity while he was leading the charge against
Clinton. Wake up.
Mac,
Libby was not convicted of leaking Plame's identity; he was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice.
This is a real issue because Bush got up on his podium and told we the people that those found to have known about this will be punished. If he knew all along, his lying is criminal and moreover a slap in the face to the public.
Flash back nine years...to Bill Clinton wagging his finger and saying he did not have sex with Monica Lewinsky. Granted, this was a lie based on Clinton's very self-serving definition of what constituted sex. I know that my wife would not accept this explanation, but c'mon...the underlying issue was consensual sex with an adult.
Contrast that with the revelations coming from McClellen's book. Whether or not the Plame disclosure was technically a felony, the Bush inner circle certainly reacted as though they had committed a crime. Why else would they send a spokesman out with errant information exonerating Libby, Rove, etc. while the president was simultaneously claiming that anyone in his administration who leaked would be "taken care of"?
I don't buy this "everybody does it, its no big deal" attitude. What Clinton did had no impact upon our standing in the world, national debt levels, or safety of American troops. What Bush did was part of a multimedia full-court press for war with Iraq. Despite this immense disparity between the how these two lies affected the average American, Clinton was impeached, while Pelosi keeps this important oversight function "off the table".
Start the hearings. Either Bush was part of the cover-up from the very beginning, or his most trusted advisors were feeding him misinformation, and he lapped it up. Either way, the McClellen revelation lays bare the disfunction at the top that has led us into a war with no end.
IMPEACHMENT AND JAIL FOR ALL THOSE INVOLVED. AT THE VERY LEAST, THEY ALL SHOULD RESIGN FROM THEIR PUBLIC OFFICES RIGHT NOW!
Seen on a bumper sticker:
Bush - Cheney 2008
Why let the law stop us now?
The right wingers went after Clinton on a personal issue, and yes he lied, because it was none of our business, it didn't affect national security whether or not he touched or didn't touch anybody.
The corruption in this administration has reached a high unmatched by any other. The Bush years will go down as the worst in U S history.
Lying under oath (no matter what the subject) is illegal. Clinton knew he was lying under oath and hoped no one would find out. Yet the blue dress proved he committed perjury. You can pretend all you want it was meaningless, but it was illegal.
Add that to a slanted article that distorts the truth and you get a bunch of liberals crying about things they don't know anything about. That pretty much sums up most of their complaints.
To help clear things up, here is from msnbc.com (even a liberal rag like that eventually comes clean).
Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan does not believe President Bush lied to him about the role of White House aides I. Lewis Scooter Libby or Karl Rove in the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity, according to McClellan's publisher.
Peter Osnos, the founder and editor-in-chief of Public Affairs Books, which is publishing McClellan's book in April, tells NBC from his Connecticut home that McCLellan, "Did not intend to suggest Bush lied to him."
Bill Clinton is a pathetic loser that did not do anything constructive as President. He had 8 separate opportunities to capture or kill Bin Laden, he did nothing because he was afraid the action might negatively impact his poll numbers which was all he cared about with the exception of sex with women other than his wife. As far as Plame goes, it is accepted fact that she was not covert at the time of her supposed outing, for an outing to be a crime a CIA agents status must be covert which she was not, if she was not covert no crime was committed. By the way, Saddam most definitely had WMD's, prior to the war they were shipped to Syria on Russian trucks. The administration has not made a big deal of it because they don't want to embarrass the Russian's.
Impeachment is too good for this bunch. They should be tried for war crimes.
All Republicans can say when confronted with Shrubs illigal (criminal) actions is "Clinton lied about sex" I don't remember anyone dieing because of his inappropiate actions. Shrub.Cheney and the others under Shrub should all be tried as WAR CRIMINALS and sent to jail.
Are you even a little suprised? Remember, wer'e talking about the republican party! The chosen party of david duke. The party that butchered ma x cleland. swift boated john kerry. The party whose members refer to me as a member of the democrat.... party! The party of hatered and dishonesty! And how about this In my 62 years I've never met a racist who wasn't a republican,, Bill
Ian Thal said it. Independent prosecutor.
Why would anybody believe a liar the second time out?
Ya gotta wonder about those that are so quick to believe him this time.
Outing a covert CIA officer working on nuclear proliferation in Iran is not only treason, it undermines every claim the administration has ever made to be concerned for the safety of the American people. These people don't care about Americans, their only concern is accumulating power. Comparing this drive toward autocracy to Clinton's lying about a BJ is the height of absurdity, and I say that as someone who was seriously disappointed in him when it happened. I would never defend a president's committing of adultery, so why are there people on the right willing to defend a president's committing of treason? It's politics before pride for these people...I just hope they realize just how blinded by hate they've become before our country goes the way of Rome.
Some of you are contending that a politician lying is no big deal. Like we shouldn't expect more. Well, does that mean we shouldn't be appalled or disgusted when a convicted molester ends up molesting again? Of course not. To discount this as "Well, that's a politician for ya," is the height of cynicism. I am cynic too. I don't believe a thing corporations or CEO's say, including the CEO of America Inc. But I still believe we should expect integrity, honesty, and leadership from our politicians. When we don't get it, we should use the law to its fullest extent possible to "overthrow" these scoundrels.
In what way is the treasonous act of outing a CIA agent not news or old news?
You cannot state this and also be for defending America against terrorists.
I'll have faith in this system when I see these crooks hanging from the white house lawn. To the idiotic republican loyalists... the rest of us need to understand that this is the %28 percent of the population that would love to see a fascist state. Those idiots that think this is a dead issue... are in fact, brain dead.
Bush is a liar because He Now Knows Dick Cheney ordered Libby to Leak CIA undercover operative classified information, Karl Rove Leaked this classified information to Robert Novak, and Armitage also leaked this to Bob Woodward -- And BUSH STILL HAS DONE NOTHING as Promised! All Must be Prosecuted under Official Secrets Act!
Bravo -- Clark, Robert, Stone, and Ian (7, 8, 9 and 15).
You, too, Andrew and Floridadude (22, 23)!
Plame is an idiot.
Did anyone see the contrived sob story on 60 minutes?
Big suprise 60 minutes would be sympathetic to the cause of the left.
Oh well.... I guess when the dems win in 08 will be back to peace at any cost.
Can anyone say J. Carter?
Isn't it obvious that we could save a lot of time and money if we just "water boarded" the entire Bush Administration? That is their coveted process for quickly getting the "truth" from people.
Relax people and read http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/11/publisher_of_mc.php
When do you learn to do more research before you start screaming about your president's lies. Everybody already know who licked and said what. Dem should stop wasting time and start performing thir duty in congress, maybe approval raiting will go up a little.
hang the mass media propanganda makers who dont report on real stories. they are as bad as the administration.
'"The president has not and would not, ever, give his spokespeople inaccurate information' to pass on to reporters, Tony Fratto said."
when you have Karl Rove on your staff this may not be needed. Did Bush know? i have no doubt. this presidency is a lie and any reference to Clinto nad his BJ lie is sophmoric at best. No one died on Clinton's excuse while 4000 Americans are buried for Bush II's lies. Let's get this dipstick out of office and slam the White House door behind him and his Anti-Christ VP while we are at it.
The worst part of it all is that you still believe that there are two parties. The democrats and the republicans are more like the AFC and the NFC: two parts of the NFL. Both parties are wholly owned subsidiaries of the new Robber Barons (Corporate Amerika). The Bush / Clinton connection started back when Papa Bush was running the country for Reagan. Remember Iran /Contra? They needed a place to land their shipments of cocaine that they got from the Contras and to send the guns to the Contras. Arkansas airports were just the ticket. Gov. Clinton connected with the Bush regime back then and has been handsomely rewarded with a turn in the White House. Unfortunately the deal isn't complete yet. Now it is Hillary's turn. Since the elections are rigged they can finish paying off the Clintons now.
I think it 's really bad that are higher up people give out that information and nothing is done about it or the people who are resposible.
why do i even bother to read these comments... you people are sheep. tools of the very political rhetoric you constanly complain about.
everybody knows who the real leaker was. It was richard armitage. fitzgerald figured this out in the first few months of his 2yr long investigation. yet he continued to pursue the administration anyway.
ohh and btw... how on earth can anyone be guilty of outing a covert cia operative if they arent even covert? if any of you care to remember the hearings Victoria Tensing repeatedly explained to the counsel that Mrs Plame could not be outed as a covert agent cause her status at the time was not covert. Victoria is only the woman who wrote the law that governs this situation... thats all...
you people should really consider educating yourselves instead of constantly spouting conspiracy theory garbage all the time. this case wreaks of the same stench that surrounded the duke reap case... pure politics
"Vicariously I... live while the whole world dies"
If former White House press secretary Scott McClellan's assertion is true and President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney knew about their aide's role in leaking the identity of a CIA operative, it would appear that their actions have been both unethical and criminal. If you or I, as ordinary citizens, had behaved as Bush and Cheney appear to have, without delay, we would be arrested and tried for a treasonable offense. Furthermore, the court would be unlikely to show us any mercy and we would find ourselves in prison for many years.
Outing a CIA agent endangers the life of the agent and it destroys the agent's ability to conduct clandestine work for our nation. For this reason, the outing of CIA agents has been unanimously legislated by both Republicans and Democrats to be a federal offence. Just as critically, CIA outings, put at risk the lives, safety and liberty of all with whom that agent has interacted in his or her career.
As a consequence of past CIA agent outings, agent contacts (friends of our nation who are both US citizens and foreign nationals) have been arrested, tortured and murdered. When agent outings occur, the CIA must carefully and covertly notify endangered agent contacts of their vulnerability. The number of contacts that the CIA must notify may amount to many hundreds of people. The chain of damage and of damage control can be enormous and costly. CIA agent outing is not an inconsequential matter or a pardonable behavior. Such egregious action can not be dismissed by declaring: what do you expect of a politician? or: the President has a tough job, let's be understanding and give him a break.
As concerned citizens, the question for all of us to ask is: do we want to encourage and support leaders who act responsibly and uphold and defend the laws and constitution of the United States, or will we overlook behavior that no person who cares about the rule of law would accept.
As a citizen, I vote as an Independent. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I have no political axes to grind. I have no party loyalty to uphold. When I vote, I try to identify leaders who, even if they are not entirely truthful, aim to act with an underlying integrity, leaders who demonstrate respect for the principles of fairness, law and liberty. I ask you, my countrymen and women: where do we draw the line between rough and tumble politics and brazen criminality? When do we say, to any politician: we have had enough: step down.
Well, at least the Bush Haters aren't letting the facts get in the way. They are consistent...
I'll vote for the first candidate who promises to FOLLOW the constitution AND to force the media to disband into smaller groups. The media is as much at fault for complicity in this deception!
When Clinton lied, no one died!
The George W. Bush White House willfully and intentionally released the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson to discredit her, since she, in her capacity as a CIA agent, discovered that the Bush White House assertion that "Yellow Cake" (Uranium) was shipped to Iraq was FALSE. Bush was therefore unable to use the "Yellow Cake" rationale as a pretext to proceed on the roadmap to war with Iraq. The rationale for the Iraq war was the announcement that the location of Saddam Hussein was discovered by the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Defense.
We have come to realize as an electorate that the most we can hope for from a president is equivocation, and when we do catch them in a lie we are told later that it is for our own good that they lied, and besides, no one with the temerity to speak truthfully could ever become president. The truth, if not cliche, is just too frightening.
If the alleged violations of the Official Secrets Act and subsequent lies are considered no worse than Clinton's infidelity and subsequent lies, then no one should object to Congress treating Bush & Co. similarly with impeachment hearings.
It's just routine; just following procedure. No big deal. These guys in the White House should have nothing to fear if they've done nothing wrong. We just want to ask a few questions, and then they can be on their way. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause the witnesses.

"He employed only Yes men to his cabinet...and YES they are just as liable for this mess." -comment #11
Bush's real Yes men are the American voters. So many people and politicians who were gung-ho for the invasion in 2003 (when we could have done something about it) are now criticizing Bush and posturing to see who can be the most anti-war on the block. Remember that Vietnam was a popular war at one time, yet everyone you talk to nowadays was against it...
-Obama 2008
And lost in the entire knee jerk to implicate Bush is the reality that Joe Wilson was the REAL liar and fabricator. Classic.
When the Republicans went after Clinton in their horrible crusade for morality, though the chief prosecutor, Gingrich, was dallying with a couple mistresses at the same time, they talked about lies as the excuse for the impeaching. Getting a bit on the side is not an impeachable offense of a sitting president, while deliberately exposing a CIA operative is, not to mention all the other laws they broke. This administration is all about lies and, now, they got caught. They should be impeached as the only reasonable course of action. It is the only course after the terrible debacle of this Iraqi war and what it has cost to those families of the daughters and sons killed over there for a grab at cheap (for them, not for us) oil. Impeach them now.
Im
The only thing I care about is the left is in extreme pain and it will last another year.
" . . .I would like to see the candidates run against each other . . ." comment #2
If you pay attention to what actions tell about character, as in watching the actions of Bush long ago, before he ran, we can run the candidates against each other ourselves; we can tell who will be honest and just and fair and not the slave of personal disappointments and perceived ownership. How do you read character? It's easy and we all know it. We just get bogged down in policy as such, not policy in how the contours of the candidate's mind work and what drives him or her. Everyone knows that if we had paid attention to the personal failures and weaknesses as clearly shown by his actions and family stuff, we would not have elected Bush because we fell for his "no nation building" and so forth.
Why do people think only 1 person (Armitage) could leak?
Should Fitzgerald have called off the investigation when he learned this?
If he was part of the incompetent Bush administration he would have.
And why did Scooter commit perjury if everything was hunky-dory as some people paint it here?
I guess the boston .com doesnt want to publish what i said .proves youre all a bunch of nutty democracts.Thatas why i moved south, good luck on your impeachment, try Hillary who lied, youll get Nancy p,

Divided we fall.
That Bush lied us into an illegal war in Iraq is now pretty much historical fact. They've lied about nearly everything since 9/11. So why is it such a stretch given all the other stated facts we know (such as Bush and Cheney urging Congress not to investigate 9/11 and their resistance to even the whitewash 9/11 Commission) to consider that they lied about 9/11 as well? It is far past time to do a proper criminal investigation of 9/11 to see if even the War on Afghanistan is also a lie.
