Giuliani, Romney respond to Obama comments
Republicans Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney had very different takes -- befitting their public personas -- on Barack Obama telling high school students in New Hampshire that he drank and experimented with drugs when he was their age.
Romney, who projects a squeaky-clean family-friendly image, called Obama comments a "huge error."
"It's just not a good idea for people running for president of the United States, who potentially could be the role model for a lot of people, to talk about their personal failings while they were kids, because it opens the doorway to other kids thinking, 'Well I can do that too,' " Romney said while campaigning in Iowa Tuesday.
The twice-divorced Giuliani, who is on his third marriage, is estranged from his two children, and regularly says he's not perfect, was far more forgiving.
"I respect his honesty," Giuliani said at a campaign stop in Chicago, according to the Associated Press.
"One of the things that we need from our people that are running for office is not this pretense of perfection," he said. "We're all human beings."

Romney's comment is RIGHT ON. You don't effectively teach children what's right by showing them examples of what not to do. Now all of those kids are thinking, "Awesome! I can go ahead and experiment with drugs and still become a United States Senator some day." This kind of teaching method gives kids a false sense of how difficult it really is to turn back once they've started down the wrong path of experimentation.
Wow, is Romney off-base here. How pompous of him to think that his constituents will do bad things in part because he has admitted to doing those bad things! Earth to Romney: you're not my spiritual leader, no politican is. You are elected into office not as a role model, but as a servant to those who voted for you. In this country, we make our own decisions as to what is morally right and wrong, and only the most foolish of us would ever look to a politican for such guidance. I don't want a choir boy running for office...wouldn't trust one as far as i could throw one. I'm no Obama fan, but I also applaud his honesty.
Mitt Romney is dead wrong. Giuliani is spot-on. Romney, just like "Matt_Damon", hides behind this fake public persona, where he can look and act "the part". These days, there are fewer and fewer places to hide, and all this is going to catch up with him before the election. He's a bad choice for Republicans.
We don't need another know-it-all in the top slot. We need someone to lead us, make good decisions based on common sense and diplomacy. Plain and simple.
Thanks Mitt, people should lie to protect others. I don't think so, all kids no about drugs, and most will try them, but knowing that they are a waste of time, coming from someone who admits them, is what is known as leadership. Romneys squeeky clean posture is for fairy tales, not real life.
I think both Giuliani and Romney have fair points. However, I think Giuliani is just trying to find ways to make his many bad life decisions look better. At least Obama overcame these issues as a young adult. Giuliani's indiscretions are far more recent.
Jk- just a question, where in the article did it say that Romney was using Obama's admission to suggest that he would be a poor leader now? As far as I could tell, Romney was simply saying that he thought it was a bad idea to discuss things like O's teenage drug abuse NOW.
Pardon me for being the one to point out the obvious.
Obama's comment was deliberate! Do you think that he just decided to talk about his drug problem on a whim? He's a presidential candidate. He knew it would get headlines. He knew from Billy's presidency that it wouldn't hurt him at the polls. He knew it would draw a sharp contrast with Hillbillary when it comes to the perception of honesty. It was actually a brilliantly planted answer.
My beef is that he purposfully chose to do this in front of high school students. I guess he thinks that he was "relating" to them...saying he's just like them. Great.
Romney is not suggsesting that Obama lie. Read the account. I don't think anybody asked Obama if he did drugs. He just volunteered the information. Romney is right - it was poor judgment on Obama's part to volunteer such information. There is nothing pompous on Romney's part to assume that youth will follow the example of their leaders, especially a popular leader among youth like Obama.
Romney does not have to hide behind a public image, he is the real deal. If asked, he could honestly answer "I did not experiment with drugs." That is refreshing.
I like Obama and I like his honesty. He is a great leader. It is admirable that Obama overcame his mistakes, but I'd rather elect someone who had the discipline to avoid those mistakes.
Its written; for all have sinned and fallen short in the glory of God. Mit has never sinned. He should tell that to God.
CHOICES. Freedom to choose. It has always been (will always be) ALL about good choices.
Every July 4 we celebrate our independence (aka - right to choose for ourselves). Every 4 years we choose whether or not to exercise that choice in choosing that person who has made (what we think are) the best choices.
We are a nation of 300,000,000 citizens. Have we really reached the point where it is too much to ask that the one person we choose is a role-model of good choices?
We all look to our role-models’ choices in making our own. Kids say, “well, she/he did it too”. Teenagers say, “It’s not fair – he/she does it too”. (or – “So what if I am using drugs? He (Obama) did it too!”) Employees look at their senior colleagues’ choices who look to the CEO’s choices, who look at the choices made by those “above” them. All the way up to the choices made by the president whose example is the ultimate barometer.
What important position in business/government is filled without looking carefully at past choices to decide whether they are qualified to make future ones in our behalf? Those with a record of bad choices say, “Well, no one is perfect.” How convenient (Guiliani). When has perfection ever been the standard? It never has been. Rather the standard has been a pattern of good choices made for good reasons.
Do we really want the role model of good choices to so dramatically lower the bar for our society?
The strength of this nation has always been rooted in goodness, good (albeit hard) choices. If we lower this standard we do so at our own (and our children’s) peril.
The recent scandals of some of the Republican leaders are the biggest reasons the party is in such trouble now. I'm glad Obama was forthright. We have a right to know these types of things about people who aspire to lead us. We need to be able to see enough about them to judge their decision-making abilities. Of course, nobody is perfect, but to throw out drug usage as one of the criteria in our decision to make somebody the most powerful person in the world is absolutely ludicrous!
As someone who lives on the front line of the war on drugs, I think Obama and Giuliani are exactly right here. Dead on.
The war on drugs has not been run in a credible manner. Teenagers are already inclined to disbelieve what they are told from authority figures, and it doesn't help when our leaders work a pretense for ethical perfection. Kids see through that. Duh.
Regardless of what Obama said, he told the truth. How many politicans can say that? Yeah right, like Romney, and Rudy didn't "experiment." Rudy ran New York, and never touched any substance, why don't we ask his ex-wives, and see what they have to say about this issue. That's what's wrong with our country today, nobody respects honesty. That's why Bush was elected not once, but twice. The same applies to our economy. We'd rather live, making the minimum monthly payments, then stop shopping. If my memory serves me correctly, didn't a certain somebody by the name of "W," get in trouble for a certain something, that is still imported from Colombia, till this day?
Lets talk about issues that are really important. Whether or not Obama should have admitted that he used drugs as a teenager is not important. Frankly, I am glad he was honest. If he did not admit this, Romney would have been on him for that.
Lets talk about important issues such as how to provide healthcare for everyone. Romney has no plan other than to criticizes those who have one. He even ignores his own plan in Mass. that he instituted when he was governor, which is like Senator Clinton's plan.
Let's talk about lobbying reform. Romney has no plan. He thinks everything is just fine.
Let's talk about immigration. Romney wants to send all the Hispanics home which is ridiculous. Obama wants to secure our borders but work with the immigrants who are here toward a responsible path to citizenship.
Lets talk about the war in Iraq. Romney thinks everything is fine and we should stay there forever. Obama proposes a responsible withdrawal so we can focus on the real threat of terrorism by working with other countries to defeat it and to reduce its causes.
Romney wants to talk about Obama's use of drugs as a teenager because Romney has no plans for this country, other than continuing to cut taxes for the wealthy and to bomb anyone we don't like.

Commitment to America, NOT!!!
Obama mentioned his church during an appearance with Oprah. It’s the
Trinity Church of Christ. Please read and go to this church’s website
and read what is written there. It is very alarming.
Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of
the U.S. If you look at the first page of their website, you will learn
that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. No
where is AMERICA even mentioned. Notice too, what color you will need to
be if you should want to join Obama’s church… B-L-A-C-K!!! Doesn’t look
like his choice of religion has improved much over his (former?) Muslim
upbringing.
Are you aware that Obama’s middle name is Mohammed? Strip away his nice
looks, the big smile and smooth talk and what do you get? Certainly a
racist, as plainly defined by the stated position of his church! And
possibly a covert worshiper of the Muslim faith, even today. This guy
desires to rule over America
while his loyalty is totally vested in a Black Africa!
This is information that should be all over the TV and newspapers.
This is why it is so important to pass this message along to all. To
think that Obama has even the slightest chance to be our president is
really scary.
