Giuliani says he'll do in DC what he did in NYC

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 21, 2007 10:10 AM

Rudy Giuliani brags some more on his record as New York's mayor in his new TV ad airing on local stations in New Hampshire and Boston.

In a flurry of images, including a magazine cover about the "rotting of the Big Apple," an announcer gives a litany of the problems facing New York when Giuliani took office: "The world's 17th largest economy. Swimming in red ink. Record crime. Runaway taxes. A million on welfare. That was New York." (Watch it here.)

Then the announcer adds: "Until Rudy. He cut taxes 9 billion. Welfare 60 percent. Crime in half. The most successful conservative turnaround in 50 years."

And as an image of the Statue of Liberty is followed by one of the US Capitol, the announcer says, "In America's most liberal city, Rudy delivered. And he can do it again, in a place called Washington, D.C."

While Giuliani says he can be America's mayor, he does not acknowledge that larger social forces and national policies were also driving down welfare rolls and crime rates. Also, independent analysts say his record of fiscal stewardship is somewhat more mixed than he claims.

  1. haha typical rudy, forgets to mention what other factors helped that, as well as not providing the firefighters correct equipment (radios).

  1. The Middle Class family became extinct in NYC on Rudy's watch - Let's not let him do that to the entire country.

  1. Generally, successful people are more modest and always point the all the help they received along the way. I think his self centered approach is a huge red flag...

  1. kirk -- faulty equipment is an unfortunate consequence of large government and poor follow-through by middle-management; mayor giuliani has always done his best to support the city of new york, its public servants, and citizens.

  1. Have we forgotten already how blind and arrogant he was, as mayor, to any view but his own? Do we really need and want another King George W. II???? I sure hope the American people can see him for what he truly is.

  1. He was a piece of garbage and the only thing that saved him politically was 9/11. Look at all the fascist stuff he did while he was in office and tell me you want that asshat as President. I'd sooner elect a monkey than him.
