Huckabee catching Romney in Iowa
A new poll confirms the surge in Iowa by Mike Huckabee, who is in a statistical tie with Mitt Romney, who has been leading for months in a state where he has invested the most time and money of any of the Republican contenders.
The ABC News/Washington Post Poll published today has Romney at 28 percent and Huckabee at 24 percent among Republican voters likely to attend the Jan. 3 caucuses. That's within the 5-percentage-point margin of error for the survey, which was conducted Wednesday through Sunday among 400 voters.
Fred Thompson came in at 15 percent, Rudy Giuliani at 13 percent, and John McCain at 6 percent.
Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, has been aiming more of his fire lately at Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, as he has risen in the polls. According to the poll, Huckabee leads Romney by a 2-1 margin among evangelical voters, a constituency both have been aggressively courting.

God help us. 3 other recent polls show Romney ahead by an average of 12 points. But I guess those don't fity your agenda so we won't mention them?
Go Mike! He is loved by Reps, Dems and Independents because he is a refreshing leader. He is real, I think people are sick of politics as usual.
Way to go Huckabee, keep up the pressure on Romney.
Who is going to vote for a blue state conservative? GO Mike GO; the only true conservative in the race!
It's a Theocracy......No difference than Iran
Get out the vote, battle the Democrats and for the world and all of us deny Clinton. Get out there and go Mike go!
Even if Huckabee pulls off a surprise in Iowa, he'll be a one-hit wonder (see Dean, Howard / McCain, John / Buchanan, Pat). All it would do is hurt Romney enough to hand Giuliani the nomination. That would be a true disaster for conservatives. Romney is the Republican party's best hope. He's the most electable and far more conservative than pro-choice, pro-immigrant Rudy.
yay for mike huckabee!!! i can't wait to elect someone who believes in young earth creationism!! Cause we can trust our country to someone who believes the earth is only 6,000 yrs old!
What about Ron Paul? He is the epitome of Conservativeness and true patriot. Why wouldn't we want a president who backs the constitution?
Great news! Let's hope Huckabee can pull an upset in Iowa. Maybe true conservative ideas and actual grassroots support will win the day instead of a flip-flopper who spent loads of money.
A vote for Mike Huckabee in Iowa is a vote for Rudy Giuliani for president. Mitt Romney is the only pro lifer in the race who can actually win the nomination. Vote with your head people, Mitt Romney is a good guy.
Loved by Dems? What are you smokin'? Hillary '08!
All that is needed now is for Huckabee to declare he's running as an independent and he'll run away from both the Republicans and the Democrats. I suppose that wouldn't be allowed, right?
well, my family has been Republican since Lincoln...and it looks like I'm leaving thefold. The party has been captured by non-thinking religious extremists....Libertarians, here I come...
There is definitely an Agenda among the "mainstream media"... and it has nothing to do with factual reporting... where has integrity and honor in journalism gone??
It's ironic that two underdogs have made the biggest gains in Iowa and New Hampshire, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. During a debate Paul and Huckabee had the most meaningful interchange so far in any debate. This is what the GOP needs now.
I like both of them. But I'mMormon so Romney gets my vote.
Aw Huckabee's likeable all right, but he raised taxes as Governor and we've already tried an Arkansas Governor as President once. Thanks but no thanks. Romney has winning business, Olympics and government experience. And he has the best chance of beating Hillary, which after all, we need to do come next November. Please Iowa, don't saddle us with another Clinton for four more years!
We are asking this individual to manage the most powerful country in the world, yet we we do not even check their resumes. Romney is the only guy in this race who has any real management experience. He is a true agent for change. He will straighten out Washington like we have never before seen. Just look at his record and experience. Come on people, lets not put a novice in the White House!
God and country....and HUCK! America needs his character and integrity in the Whitehouse.
I lived in Arkansas during the Huckabee administration. He did a lot for the state. He has a strong, Christian-based moral character and is a sincere and genuine human being. (a lot like Bush)
If Mike Huckabee can be loved by Reps, Dems, and Independents alike then we are in for a mediocre President. It sounds like he is going for the popular vote; make sure everyone loves you. The challenges that face America will not be fixed by trying not to rock the boat. We have some major changes that need to happen in the United States. I don't think likeability will carry him through the necessary policy making. I might be wrong....I just think he is having fun at the State Fair with his winning smile, howdy doos, and quitar. (The Chuck Norris ad was serious policy making ....Congress will love it.) I take the the responsiblity of voting for the President of the United States very seriously. The challenges are enormous and Washington burecrates are a tough and determined bunch. Mike Huckabee is
comfortable in Arkansas but Washington will eat him up. He might not get the 'good old boy' pats on the back there. Then again he can pull our his guitar strum a few notes and say everyone join in and lets sing together.

Vote for ANYONE but Romney!!! The last person we need leading this nation is a man who believes in a bogus religion!!
Let's set aside our differences and just compare their profiles for those that don't know you can find a lot of information on each candidate on their own website which can be found here: Let's vote the way we feel is best and leave religion out of it...

A vote for Huckabee is a vote for Giulliani.
By the end of his ten-year tenure, Governor Huckabee was responsible for a 37% higher sales tax in Arkansas, 16% higher motor fuel taxes, and 103% higher cigarette taxes, garnering a lifetime grade of D from the free-market Cato Institute. Under Governor Huckabee’s watch, state spending increased a whopping 65.3% from 1996 to 2004, three times the rate of inflation. Further, he is not someone who can be trusted to be tough on illegal immigration or to secure Amercia's borders given his past statements and positions. This is the wrong direction for America. A fiscally irresponsible candidate will divide the Republican party. Fiscal conservatives will simply not support this kind of taxing and spending. To win the whitehouse in '08, the party needs to nominate a fiscal and social Regan conservative. Huckabee is simply not that man. His record makes this clear to all.
Same old line. "leave religion out of it" If we vote based on a candidate's record, character and values; how can we keep religion out of it?
Go Huckabee! A reactionary backwoods preacher who doesn't believe in evolution has even less of winning the White House than a serial flip-flopper whose religion brings out complete intolerance in so-called "religious" people; a creepy serial liar whose had three lives and whose exploitation of 9-11 is finally catching up with him, and a mediocre actor who was even more mediocre as a senator and is the worst campaigner in years. In 2008, America will be a Blue country!!!
And as for Mitt Romney, We call him "Flipper", "Flipper" faster than lightning, no one you see is as politically expedient than he...
Don't worry about what people believe in, worry if they don't believe in anything beyond themselves. Romney's and Huckabee's religious faiths are part of what they are, and don't seem to have interfered with their abilities to deal with the world effectively.
God save us from the fascist religious right. But please, nominate one of these clowns . . . .
Mitt Romney is not more electable than Guliani in the general election. Although I like Romney better as a candidate his race against Hillary would be extremely close. Guliani, on the other hand would b able to beat Clinton by taking away New York and its 26 electoral votes.
Putt, you said: "Same old line. "leave religion out of it" If we vote based on a candidate's record, character and values; how can we keep religion out of it?"
I say, OK. But if you're not going to keep religion out of it, you should actually get to know about the religion, and not about what a bunch of uninformed bigots say about the religion. There's a big difference, and those who say they can't keep religion out of it are usually the same ones who don't get the real info on that religion before using it in their judgment of a candidate.
I'm sorry but the last thing we need in Washington is someone who is just like the rest of us...average!!! Who of us recognizes what it is going to take to bring the needed changes in Washington??? I am voting for Mitt Romney because he is anything but average. He is a leader at its highest level. You know in all truth I would be disappointed if Mitt Romney lost the election because of religious bigotry, (for I think that is what is causing him the most problem in this Primary election year) but much more disappointed if he turned from his religious beliefs like many suggest. Those kind of beliefs are the real heart of a person. Romney is clear about his faith based values of strengthening family, home, and country. Romney would serve our country better than any other candidate, but if he doesn't win....he is remains on in the lead or on top with an outstanding family of his own, an amazing record of service to others and rich in personal character. He has plenty of this world's blessings to be comfortable for the remainder of his life. He doesn't need the job of President of the United States! Plus he has a religious knowledge that brings him peace and much happiness. This giant of a man cannot really ever be called a loser. The losers are going to be the citizens of this nation if we turn our back on the best prepared candidate for a President of the United States that we've seen in a long long time. What's in this for Mitt? He really doesn't need much to make his life complete. I think he of all men came into this political process because he thought he could give something back to America, a nation and homeland that he loves. At this Thanksgiving time I would say, Thanks for going the extra mile on this one Mitt.
BobE you are spot on. Both Huckabee and Romney are very religious. But as far as I can tell, this has just made them live the values they teach- very appealing to value voters.
I will probably vote for Romney because I don't think Huckabee has enough experience, I'm less than impressed by what I've read/heard about his leadership in Arkansas, and there is no way he would ever beat Hillary (assuming she gets the Dem nomination).
In terms of likeability, according to a recent poll, Giuliani won for the most "likeable" republican. Heaven help us. If 2008 is Hillary vs. Giuliani, I'm moving to Canada.
Day by day, increasingly, Mike Huckabee is what Leadership looks like. He's an adroit public speaker calling upon his listeners to "do something," to awaken to their own empowerment, and to act in order that "Main Street," and not "Wall Street," will prevail in guarding the values and beliefs upon which the Republic was founded.
Huckabee puts his listeners at ease, and reassures them, articulating clear concepts in a natural, easy style (no doubt something well-cultivated as a pastor). One can easily imagine sitting comfortably with this man over a cup of coffee at the Main Street Cafe.
Most importantly, Huckabee convinces many that he is ONE with the FairTax grassroots movement.
Romney's recent WEAK response to FairTax questioning on “This Week with Geo. Stephanopoulos” drew a sharp contrast between Huckabee and all other presidential front-runners who will not embrace it. Huckabee understands that what's wrong with the income tax can't be fixed with "a tap of the hammer, nor a twist of the screwdriver." That his opponents cling to the destructive Tax Code, the IRS, preserving political power of granting tax favors at continued cost to - and misery of - American families, invigorates his campaign's raison d'etre.
“Main Street” will have to demand that their legislators deliver the bill to a President Huckabee.
Mitt has flipped his views on a few highly contentious issues on which most Americans are actually highly conflicted. However, the guy has stuck with his faith despite its oddities and negative perceptions. If the guy were really a spineless vote-panderer and congenital flip-flopper, he would have abandoned the Mormons a long time ago and become a non-denominational Protestant.
Wow. It's sad to see people just "rooting" for Huck because he's Christian. This is not a football game people. We don't just root for someone like us, on "our team" - that's just agoraphobia.
What matters is this - what can the next president actually do for our country?
As a voter, think of yourself as a coach trying to choose who will play starting quarterback. Would you give a crap about religion? No, you would pick the person with the MOST TALENT. Romney has PROVEN talent. Romney is CAPABLE of fixing our economy and entitlements. He has a real solution to health care problems. The list goes on and on. Romney is the only choice this year.
Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:
http://goupstate.us/index.php/lanefiller/2007/11/02/title_14
People fall into one of four categories:
1) People who see Mitt Romney for who he is and will vote for him
2) Self-righteous, religious bigots (i.e., "Christians") who will never vote for Mitt because of his religious choice
3) Liberals who are more than happy to see America's morals disentegrate and see Mitt Romney as the enemy to their cause
4) People who have been fed a pack of lies from those in categories #2 and #3
Which category do you fall into?
Huckabee's record in Arkansas of tax and spend is the wrong direction for the Republican party. Having lifetime grade of "D" from the free-market Cato Institute,
Huckabee is the wrong choce for fiscal conservatives. As such, Huckabee destroys the Regan coalition of social and fiscal conservatives and leaves the door
wide open for a third party fiscal conservative to split the Republican base and lead the Democrats into the Whitehouse in '08. United we stand as
Republicans or divided we fall.
Huckabee is a nice man. However, the United States does not need another Jimmy Carter preacher type. And we certainly do not need another Arkansas Governor! We need a proven leader who is knowledgeable in how to deal with world leaders and who has a plan for the problems the United States is facing. That is not Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, or Hillary Clinton!
1.Protection of American citizens from terrorism.
2.llegal Immigration under control.
3.Health Care crisis and tort reform
4. Prolife family values, returning morals to America. Faithful husband and father.
5. Equal trade with the world, on equal footing.
6. Excellent, proven, record of accomplishments in the private and public sector.
7. Continue to get the Iraq war under control and Iraq stabalized.
Need I name the man?
Anyone who actually thinks Romney has the best chance of winning against Hillary does not understand the negative power of the Mormon label, especially among evangelicals. If they don't turn out, the Republicans lose. It's that simple. The Bush strategy of appealing only to the evangelical base won two elections. Republicans should keep that in mind.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but people that say they are not going to vote for Romney because of his religion are being pretty ridiculous. Look at him, look at the morals he has lived his entire life. If his religion has helped him lead a moral life I think that is something that should be respected, not attacked. Huckabee seems like a great guy and would make a good president. I would be happy to vote for him in the general election, but between the two I am voting for Romney. Life long success is not luck and Romney has had a lot of it.
#37 It sounds like you would trust Huckabee over Romney when it comes to the Fair Tax. That is risky. If Romney doesn't buy into the Fair Tax.....then you better look twice at it too. Romney is the true Leader on this issue.
mitt romney's true religion is not mormonism but mammonism. the last thing this nation needs is another president who marries government with big business...chose an outsider. wake up fellow americans ( especially you - the drunkards of ephraim) and stop your descend into complete fascism. read and study the constitution.
#35 has is right. #44 does not understand that Romney has already passed the evangelical test as evidenced in Iowa and New Hampshire. The average poll has Romney ahead by an average of more than 8% still (not 1%). He could not have done that without evangelical support. The media has been claiming Huckabee is neck and neck by saying there is a 5% margin of error and adding it to Huckabee's points. They also cherry pick the polls that favor Huckabee and add the two together. What they don't say is that the error could be in Romney's favor and he could ahead by as much as 17% if you take the average of the three highest polls and give the 5% error to Romney! I'm surprised by how much the media and especially Fox News favors Huckabee while the people favor Romney.
It is only a portion, though substantial, of the going to church every week Baptists and other hard core evangelicals that really oppose Romney. There are not many of those on the Democrat side. So winning against a democrat is not a problem for Romney with Evangelicals and he has already proven the Republican side.
The best thing Romney has for winning over moderate Democrats is the power to ingite a spark in their hearts when he talks about the family. You can feel the sincerity and integrity. I truly believe he will change the political landscape to push America back to the right by convincing people to be pro-family and pro-life in a bipartisan way that has not yet been seen in this country. My liberal father cannot even deny, as of tonight, that Romney is the most convincing person of integrity in the whole election.
This country has not seen a candidate this good for the U.S. since the founding fathers. He's that good. I'll be sick if Huckabee beats him in Iowa handing the nomination to an adulterer like Guliani. Especially if it's just because he's Mormon, which it would be if it happened, but it won't!
Factual poll numbers on Huckabee's rise at:

Romney is the best candidate we've seen since the founding fathers, like John Adams. I'll be sick if an Adulterer gets nominated and looses to the domocrats because he could not distinguish himself enough from Hilliary. Romney can ingite the fire in people on both sides about protecting the family and can expain in an articulate way that no one else can about how a marriage amendment is needed. He didn't shoot from 5% to 33% in short order in a heavily evangelical state with a mediocre message no matter how much money he spent. It's a message that no one else can match. No one else can communicate it in a bipartisan way on conservative issues like he can. I think it's actually his competative advantage with the Democrats. Many Dems will have their conservative hearts rekindled.
Romney will provide maximum contrast between between conservatism and liberalism, integrity and lack of it, a fumbler vs. an articulate person, subsance vs. lack of it, as he stands next to Hilliary in the election. The American people will see it plain as day and many Dems will vote for Romney. I've seen this very thing happen in the Houson Mayoral election when Mayor Bill White(D) beat Orlando Sanchez(R). I actaully voted for a Demacrat, despite being a fierce social conservative republican, because the contrast was amazing. Orlando(R) had no experience and was fumbling around about issues while White(D) was a successful business man and gave his responses intelligently with ease and grace. No one can match Romney on these aspects, no one. Huckabee would be my second choice personally, but he is much weaker in every aspect and I would then have to concede a shift to the left and vote for Guliani because he has the next best chance of beating Hilliary.

I am a former Southern Baptist who converted to the Mormon Church at the age of 20.I am now 69 years old and the church's principals and beliefs have quided me through 49 years and the upbringing of five children , whom have never been in serious trouble of any kind. One is a respected and successful DMD.The Mormon missionaries came to my door in 1960 and asked what i knew about their Church. i replied NOTHING except poligamy, but i was not afraid to listen. I felt my own intellect would shield me from any coercion. After much scriptural study and comparision of the beliefs i gained from my parents ,i was Baptized into the Mormon Faith.Their beliefs are not shallow and require a connection of Bible scripture and logic. My Creed has always been ,TRUTH DOES NOT DEFY LOGIC.
Mike Huckabee is a true conservative and will not change his views if he runs for President in the general election. Mike supports the Right to Life Amendment and rejects research that involves the destruction of human life. Mike has made the pledge to support NO NEW TAXES as president, and you can be assured he will not go back on his word. Rather than support taxes, Mike will seek to cut wasteful spending. Mike supports the spread of freedom across the Middle East and would not hesitate to attack Iran if needed to protect the United States and Israel. Unlike other candidates, Mike would not require the support of Congress; he would do what needs to be done regardless of political consequences. And most of all, Mike is a sincere believer in Jesus Christ who will trust in God to guide him and to bless America.
Huckabee has no chance of winning...Romney can beat Hillary!!
When the Pew Research group came to Richmond for a focus session on candidates, some of the media's top reporters in the post mortem session acknowledged that they had not bothered to cover Mitt Romney because he is Mormon.
The polls reflect that bias is continuing. Ask yourself who actually participates in polls! How many of us would answer questions by an anonymous pollster? Anyone the least fiscally or politically savvy will not. From the tenor of the questions it is perfectly apparent who underwrites any poll.
When is the country going to look at candidate Couples in terms of unifying the country and moving the country forward economically, diplomatically -- re resolving Iraq and Iran -- and now Pakistan -- educationally, and socially., and yes, morally!!! Politics is the art of the possible.
It's time to start listening to what candidates are saying -- and yes, thank God, their perceptions evolve as circumstances change. It's callled Intellect. Brains. The ability to solve problems. If people lay prejudice aside Romney's are hands down the people this country needs in the White House.
Common brother and sister Americans let's get real. Romney is the best fit for the White House in 2008. Only he has the experience, intellectual and moral capacity to lead. He even has the most beautiful, respectable first lady with no tainted past. If somebody else gets the nomination, Hillary with all her husband's charm and loyal followers will be the sure winner. The Clintons are not too bad -- compared to the bullying Bushes. However, Americans are in no position to speculate their future. Go for the sure bet for change and prosperity. Nobody else will deliver this but Mitt Romney.
Otherwise, you can all just move in to our more peaceful and prosperous oil-rich Canada (ooops, maybe Bush would want to invade us too - I'm scared)
I don't believe that the reason that Huckabee is doing so well is religion as much as simple rationale. Honestly, what is the deal with Mitt Romney immigration position? He's pro-choice, next he pro-life, then he's pro choice, now his pro-life. I watched the debate and truthfully I respect that Romney can admit when he is wrong, but that does not change the fact that he did wrong. Remember the serial Ted Bundy admitted he was wrong too, but faced punishment.
Also, this is what doesn't add up. Romney said once he reviewed the subject of human cloning, he realized that life began at conception. So, you mean to tell me that Romney in all his years as governor wasn't once curious enough to investigate whether or not abortion was right or wrong. It's a little questionable?
The truth is Romney could never prove that it wasn't a living being. Therefore, by simple rationale, if you can prove if it is a human life, you must protect it as if it is one. If you are hunting and you hear something in the bushes directly in front of you, what do you do? YOU DON'T SHOOT! Why? Because you don't know whether you target is an animal or a human life.
I'll end with this: I don't care what the Bible, the Book or Mormon, or the Koran say about abortion. I care what science and logical says. It has long been proven by many embryologists and philosophers that life begins before birth. Romney lack of investigation in this area is truly sad.
This is why after being a long-time supporter of Romney, I cannot vote for him. I want a President whose principles are consistent rather than convenient. This is why I am voting for Mike Huckabee. It is not because he is religious, it is not because he is republican, it is simply because he is right.
We've said all along that Romney and Huckabee should join together to beat the Clinton-Obama juggernaut. Those who would rather see a Godless despot in office than see a Christian of another religion get elected is not a true American. They are a narrow minded bigot who needs to realize that love is the only language their God speaks, not this holy-than-thou stance. Lets work to getting these two good guys together before campaign realities make them adversaries.--Dr. Max Chartrand
