Huckabee stresses faith, rises in polls

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 28, 2007 10:46 AM

Republican Mike Huckabee is increasingly playing up his faith, and it appears to be helping him surge in Iowa.

Today, as the Republican field prepares to debate tonight in Florida, the ordained Baptist minister picked up the endorsement of Jerry Falwell Jr., son of the late televangelist who founded Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., where the son is now president.

On Tuesday, Huckabee announced that James Draper, past president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and syndicated radio host Janet Folger will lead his Faith and Values Coalition.

While the evangelical Christian community has not coalesced behind a single candidate, Huckabee is picking up his share of endorsements. The former Arkansas governor just started running a TV ad in Iowa that emphasizes his faith. And support from evangelicals is boosting his standing leading up to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

Several recent polls have shown him a close second to Mitt Romney in Iowa. And a new Rasmussen Reports survey out today shows him slightly ahead of Romney, 28 percent to 25 percent, though the lead is within the 3.5-percentage-point margin of error. Among voters who have attended the caucus, Huckabee leads Romney 30 percent to 23 percent.

Huckabee's support has grown by 12 percentage points in the last month, and he has support from 48 percent of evangelical Christians, according to the poll.

According to the Associated Press, Huckabee told 8,000 Liberty University students at a convocation that while pundits are at a loss to explain his rise in the polls in Iowa, the reason is support from evangelical Christians.

"I think there are people all over America praying for me," Huckabee said.

  1. I just want to say it here first.

    TOP TIER
The top 3 republican candidates are, in no particuliar order, Ron Paul, Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee.

    LONG SHOTS
Fred Thompson and John McCain will both call it quits in the near future as they have no momentum and are losing ground. Mitt Romney will keep spending his own money for a while but will find that he can't catch Huckabee.

Remember, you heard it here first.

  1. The liberal media’s hype regarding Huckabee, his proclamation of faith and what a formidable GOP candidate he’s going to be is part of their game plan. They know he’s a loser. Don't be fooled. Investigate his record and stance on immigration. GOP voters are being taken for a major ride.

  1. Tonight's debate is tremendously important and may be the single most significant event in the race prior to the first primary. This is why I am encouraging people to take my challenge and visit www.abuckforhuck.com.

If we tie our contributions to the candidates' performance, they will take note of where we as a people stand on the issues.

  1. Anyone interested in what Huckabee is really like face to face should try this funny (but it actually happened) column:

  1. Yes, Angela, it is the liberal media leading the ignorant masses. Hmm, maybe the ignorant masses wouldn't be so mindless and stupid if it wasn't for the neo-cons cutting education funding!

    Bad liberal media, bad!

  1. The Faith Candidate? Overseas most people laugh at the way we mix politics and religion. Remember the separation of church and state. We are being ridiculous and ridiculed round the world for our preocuppation with this nonsense.

  1. Get faith out of politics and use Reason instead. I'm sick of religious bigots belittling Nature and non-believers by proclaiming unjustified, unfounded, fairy-tale "truths" and then using it to erode our civil liberties by misinterpretation from the inside, like cancer. We need a president who embraces evidence; not someone who decides things - like the origin and future of existence - based on a lack of it.

  1. Huck's got a lot of support, from the religious right and the liberal left. The religious right want him cause he's one of them. The liberal left want him cause it won't matter who they nominate any of their candidates could beat him....

Of course, if he got the nod. Watch for a serious 3rd party to jump into the race.

The American public will not elect a religious right candidate again for 8+ years.

  1. This is not what Jesus meant when he told his disciples to let their light shine. Our theology should rightly shape our politics but using our faith to promote our political ambitions is bad theology. Unfortunately bad theology is rampant in evangelical Republicans.

  1. We need Huckabee in the White House. He is the only candidate with the courage and faith to Nuke the Iranians.

Huck knows what's best for this country. We need to nuke them and he is one of the only candidates that says he will.

  1. Huckabee is a product of the any body but a Mormon movement by Born Again Christians. Huckabee is not a good candidate, he is just not a Mormon. Huckabee was not even the religious rights first choice. They wanted Fred Thompson to be their man but Fred couldn't even motivate them. So Huckabee wins by default. The religious right don't care that he is not the best man for the job, they just care that he is not a Mormon. I want the best candidate for President. If I was running a company and just hired a guy because he went to the same church, I might not be in business very long. If that is the voter attitude than maybe our country will not be in business very long. We hired the religous rights guy last time based on his religion (George Bush) no that worked out well. Come on enough already Romney is the most qualified guy for the job.

  1. A friend called from Europe this weekend while watching Mike Huckabee on CNN Late Edition. He has been in Israel many times and does business around the world. He asked who this idiot Huckabee was talking nonsense about Israel. He was wondering when Americans were going to learn their lesson about who we elect as president. See for yourself.

I especially like when he wants to tell Saudi Arabia “They can keep their oil just like they can keep their sand.” Oh boy.

  1. To be blunt: From what I've been reading across the internet...Most of the Evangelical/Christian Right are NOT voting for Huckabee and they are NOT voting against Romney; what they are is anti-Mormon and Romney being Mormon is at the right place in the wrong time. The Evangelical/Christian movement is voting against the Mormons. Romney has the skills the intelligence, the vision, the wisdom and experience to be a great President. As a United States President, Romney would do much good for this nation, but the Christian Right, out of fear and a long and nurtured tradition, cannot bring themselves to see the strengths of the man. Romney has become pro-life, that would be herald if he were not a Mormon. Reagan was praised for his change of heart and mind in becoming pro-life.

Even the Democrats are fighting Romney because they see the great potential he has for bringing about productive and healthy change. He is being copied on many issues because they are sound. There is partisan politics at play here. If the Democrats can’t do it, then they don’t want the Republicans to do it either… and they don’t care what success someone has had. Romney has through hard work and optimism made a very successful life for himself and has helped those he has served both in private and political sector. I believe he would do all within his influence and means to bring about security and prosperity for all Americans. Prosperity for all Americans is something that other politicians say they want to bring, but have not been as successful as Romney in bringing it about. Romney is the candidate that Democrats do not want to go up against.

Romney is just one of those unique and outstanding leaders that don’t come along very often. He is like a Halley's Comet that you might only get to see once in your life time. I hope this nation doesn't miss out of this opportunity to have such a prepared leader.

  1. In regard to comment #10, the website www.mikehuckabeeforum.com is a false grassroots campaign site. It was created by supporters of a rival candidate - supporters who have way too much time on their hands.

The actual website for the Mike Huckabee grassroots campaign is www.hucksarmy.com.

  1. Huckabee won Hands down. He is the most articulate, humble, real candidate out of all of them-after all the verbal stumbles of the Bush presidency we have finally discovered someone who can communicate republican principles with wit & wisdom. McCain came out ok. Romney just got a beating..wow..definitely NOT his night. I wonder what Hugh Hewitt and all those who were so ready to give Romney the mantle of conservatism are doing after this one. HUCKABEE is a force to be contended with, and tonight he showed WHY he is on the rise in Iowa. The Underdog is poised to take a bite out of Rudy McRomney on Jan 3rd. The others were all a distant..3rd...Duncan Hunter had some ok stuff and Fred is frankly coming across as kinda like..hey man ..someone please pick me for VP so I can sport my hot wife around DC. And what was with the INQUISTION Style question the crackpot youtuber asked about the Bible(As if he has ever read it)(and all the man on man gay questions...and the rebel flag...weird..there had to be some better questions that those...but wow did the gays in the military question make Romney look like a TOTAL flip flopper...what a bad night for him.

  1. Maybe some education is in order here. Some of this may be laughable but it is entirely true and verifiable in the Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price (all Mormon sacred documents) or by cornering and asking any knowledgeable Mormon. To their credit, they won't lie about it. Read to the end to see why it matters... Mormons believe that there are 3 levels in heaven. They believe that the only way you can reach the highest level (the Celestial Kingdom) is to be a Mormon in good standing and then to marry another Mormon in good standing inside of a Mormon temple. This wedding includes a secret ceremony during which both the man and the wife are issued secret Mormon underwear which they must wear for the rest of their lives (I'm not joking). Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers. A famous Mormon saying is "As Man now is, so God once was and as God now is, so man will become." (Blasphemy?) Mormons believe that, if they have gone through the ceremonies above, die and reach the Celestial Kingdom, they will become Gods. That's right, they believe that they will become equals to God. They believe that they will each be given their own planet which they will preside over. They will have multiple wives and engage in celestial sex in order to populate their planets. . Any Mormon who denies any of the above or leaves the Mormon church will be treated as an "apostate" and will loose both his family and friends. A look into the biography of Joseph Smith (19th century writer of Mormon doctrine and originator of Mormon faith via a special "looking glass" and tablets given to him by Moroni the "angel") will reveal a troubled young man, rebellious in the church and previously arrested for scamming. Most Mormons I have met are genuinely good family people with good family values but do we really want a president and commander in chief who believes all of this? I think not. Now, start Googling and calling your Mormon church officials to verify the above. You will find it all to be true.

  1. Can anyone explain to me the logic behind a minister promoting war and the death penalty. What would Jesus think of Huckabee? Also he is for giving scholarships to immigrants over our own children. Come on people don't be so stupid this guy is just another war mongering neocon, with some bad liberalism tied in. How can the religous right be behind this guy? It doesn't make sense. Actually I guess it makes about as much sense as an evangalist supporting Guilliani.

  1. I am a “Mormon” (a member of The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and I believe in Jesus Christ. I am a Christian. Yet, there are people who say that because I do not believe as their demonination believes, hence – so many religions, so many denominations, than I cannot be a Christian, that I belong to a cult. Do you know how rude, arrogant and offensive this is?

Who decides if I am a Christian or not?

Do you decide if I am a Christian? Is that your role?

    What is a Christian?

I have read and heard so many lies about my church that it is appauling that these people can say they follow the Savior.

The Savior I know encourages unity.

Jesus prayed, as quoted in John 17:
    20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

    Mormons=Christians?

"The Book of Mormon," Alma 34:
8 And now, behold, I will testify unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know that Christ shall come among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of his people, and that he shall atone for the sins of the world; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
9 For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made.
10 For it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice; yea, not a sacrifice of man, neither of beast, neither of any manner of fowl; for it shall not be a human sacrifice; but it must be an infinite and eternal sacrifice.
11 Now there is not any man that can sacrifice his own blood which will atone for the sins of another. Now, if a man murdereth, behold will our law, which is just, take the life of his brother? I say unto you, Nay.
12 But the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered; therefore there can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the world.
13 Therefore, it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice, and then shall there be, or it is expedient there should be, a stop to the shedding of blood; then shall the law of Moses be fulfilled; yea, it shall be all fulfilled, every jot and tittle, and none shall have passed away.
14 And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.
15 And thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name; this being the intent of this last sacrifice, to bring about the bowels of mercy, which overpowereth justice, and bringeth about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance.
16 And thus mercy can satisfy the demands of justice, and encircles them in the arms of safety, while he that exercises no faith unto repentance is exposed to the whole law of the demands of justice; therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about the great and eternal plan of redemption.
    • • •
    37 And now, my beloved brethren, I desire that ye should remember these things, and that ye should work out your salvation with fear before God, and that ye should no more deny the coming of Christ,;
38 That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God, in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.

"The Book of Mormon," Ether 12:
41 And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever. Amen.

  1. I have one simple question to pose regarding Mike Huckabee's attacks on Mitt Romney's religion. How can anyone who does not fit into Huckabee's picture of a perfect Christian feel that they would have fair and unbiased representation in government if he was elected President? There are many points of consititional propriety that could be argued, but simply and to the point, it feels when he talks about "the people" he is only talking to and about Evangelical Christians. In reality this group is a small minority of today's American population, so again, I pose. How can anyone who does not fit into Huckabee's picture of a perfect Christian feel that they would have fair and unbiased representation in government if he was elected President?
