Patrick explains Obama endorsement

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 20, 2007 04:35 PM

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said on CNN this afternoon that he has a good relationship with Hillary Clinton and that she has run an "almost flawless campaign," but he is supporting Barack Obama in the Democratic presidential race because he is uniquely qualified.

"I'm not interested just in friendships," Patrick told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. The country, he said, needs a leader who can inspire service and sacrifice.

Patrick, who served in Bill Clinton's Justice Department, also weighed in on the side of Obama in his latest spat with Clinton. Obama told Iowa voters on Monday that his childhood experiences in Asia and his family in Kenya give him a greater foreign policy understanding than politicians who merely studied foreign affairs in school or took junkets while in elected office.

Today in Iowa, Clinton said, "Now voters will judge whether living in a foreign country at the age of 10 prepares one to face the big, complex international challenges the next president will face."

Patrick said all presidents have access to foreign policy experts, but Obama's time in "huts and villages," not just palaces does give him an important perspective. "What he brings that's unique is some life on the ground," Patrick said.

Patrick also said he agrees with Michelle Obama's recent comments that America would be viewed differently in the world if her husband is elected and becomes the nation's first black president.

The governor said if voters closed their eyes and envisioned the kind of leadership they wanted, the image they would see is Obama, but the political establishment keeps saying that he is not electable. Unlike most campaigns, Obama's is offering a vision of why he should win, not just how he would win, Patrick said.

"He's lifting us all up, and it's very exciting," Patrick said.

It's very refreshing to listen to Gov. Patrick.

Thanks for endorsing 'the answer' to America's problem in this perilous time.

  1. The Governor is absolutely right! Obama have managed to inspire the nation. Lets face it, Iowa is the least diverse state.. and people are gtting the message and he is doing very well. If we believe and not create barriers for him.. surely this country will be looked different from across the world.
    Go Obama!

  1. Type your comment here..During the J-J dinner in Des Moines, Chris Dodd reminisced about being young in the '60's, when everything seemed possible, when talented young people wanted to serve their government, and then he lamented the cynicism that seems so current today. At the end of the speeches, Senator Obama spoke. His speech was almost as response to Senator's Dodd's call for a new spirit in America, for a new vision. Senator Obama reminds me of another Senator from Illinois, the one Doris Kerns Goodwin, describes in Team of Rivals, smart and focused and able to bring together all those very able rivals on the stage with him. One way or another I believe this will be a very good year for the Democrats.

  1. Sorry Hillary! Obama is the man for the job. Hillary can’t beat his honesty, sense of judgment, ability to bring people together. He has new ideas and will restore our credibility in the world. Many people have realized that her politic is not different from what we have always been seeing and that’s why Rep would eat her. Only Obama will bring the change we can believe in. Clinton is not electable.
    Thanks Governor
