Romney gets big endorsement

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 5, 2007 01:17 PM

Mitt Romney today snagged a major endorsement from a pivotal figure for social conservatives.

Paul Weyrich, the former co-founder of the Moral Majority, announced his support for Romney, Christian Broadcasting News is reporting.

Weyrich, who is now CEO of the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, praises Romney's "conservative principles" and "clear conservative vision" to strengthen America's military, economy, and families, according to a statement obtained by CBN.

"Because of his experience, vision, and values, I am proud to support Governor Romney," Weyrich said in a statement.

Romney said, "Paul Weyrich has put his stamp on the conservative movement in this country. It is an honor to have his support and counsel."

Romney has been avidly seeking the support of social conservatives, along with other Republican presidential contenders. He won a straw poll at a recent summit in Washington, though his rivals questioned the results because many of the votes were cast online.
