Romney takes credit on stem cells
Mitt Romney's campaign is seeking to capitalize on today's announcement that scientists have created stem cells without having to make or destroy embryos.
It pointed out that Romney has long called for a less ethically- and morally-charged alternative and highlighted an op-ed piece published today on National Review Online that praises him as the only presidential candidate who has embraced an unambiguous and principled stance on the alternatives, incorporating them into his proposed domestic policy.
Romney's campaign also circulated an op-ed piece published in June, in which Romney called on Congress to support such research into alternatives.
As Massachusetts governor, Romney imposed in August 2006 a controversial limit on stem cell research, saying that scientists could not use stem cell lines developed in states with less restrictive laws than Massachusetts, which barred the production of embryos for the expressed purpose of scientific exploration.

Yes! Way to go Gov. Romney! He was the only one of all candidates supporting this research and willing to use federal funds for it. It is paying off and shows his deep intelligence and ability to make good decisions. Vote Mitt Romney into the White House in 2008! We need a man with his ability!
Right behind you Mark.....Vote Mitt Romney
Mitt Romney is the man. Do your Homework, leave your misinformed bigotry aside and you will find a guy who is very sharp.
Mitt Romney 2008
I think Gov. Romney stands on alternative stem cell is paying him. He is the only candidate with strong decision on the debate. I admire his honest and steadfast on the issue and wish him success on his presidential bid.
Big deal! It's not like Romney invented the new method of stem cell research. Many candidates back alternative methods of stem cell research. When Romney begins to care as much about the secular, gay, moderate, liberal, etc citizens of the United States as he does for the so-called "unborn", then maybe I'll give him a second look, but I don't expect that to ever happen. He is too set in his 1950's view of the world.
I have not paid a lot of attention to the campaign until recently, as I am a Republican and most of the stories in the new have focused on the Democratic candidates. In the couple weeks, I have been paying attention and am very impressed with Mitt Romney. He is articulate, has the conservative values I share, and treats others -- including his adversaries -- with respect. I am increasingly of the opinion that he will win the Republican nomination and that when the country really hears him speak, he has a good shot at being elected President. The more I see of him, the more I think he's what the country needs to bring people together to find real solutions to the problems our country is facing. I think he has the strengths to find solutions and to make us proud to be Americans again.
The last thing we ever need is for this do-nothing slick used car salesman to be our President.
Haven't we had Republican rule for the past 7 years? Enough is enough.
Mittens Romney, big deal. Your wife has MS. So I am thrilled for her but you......are so moral you denied years of research that could have been done while you were in charge of the Commonwealth. You know, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with the finest MS research resources in the United States. Your support of research and education during your stay here were very unimpressive. Mittens, you are plastic and very transparent. You deserve yourself. You and the Archbishop of Boston are lethal and toxic. Maybe the Archbishop could be your VP. Peace, man.
"Do nothing slick used car salesman"? Give me a break. Mitt Romney has accomplished more in his lifetime than all the three leading democrats combined. Further, he has the most diverse resume of any of the candidates. He has led worldwide companies, rescued the Olympics, lead Massachusetts, and been a leader in his church. This story is just another example of how Mitt Romney is ahead of his opponents in almost every way. His analytical style combined with his morals will make him the best President we've had in a long time.
Mitt has my vote! Romney is the best candidate for many reasons. I especially like the fact that he earned his millions in the private sector.
Romney for President
The very LAST thing Romney is is a "slick used car salesman". You are obviously very oblivious to his background and credentials. Anyway, I applaud Mitt's reverence for human life and it's importance. Mitt's desire to protect human embryo's shows only one of the many aspects of his integrity. Regarding his stance on abortion and gays, (which I happen to agree with especially because I believe marriage is between a man and a woman only - gays should be civil unions or something else) I feel that issue is a secondary issue. Right now, our country needs someone with superior business and financial management to get this country stabilized and productively back on its feet. I TRULY believe Mitt Romney is the best candidate for the tasks at hand. He has the skills and know-how to do it. I believe his support for the sanctity of life only adds to his long list of wise insights.
Thank you for running, Mitt. You are a breath of fresh air for everyone.
Mitt Romney is the most qualified candidate of either party for President to the
United States. When a person's conduct contradicts Mitt's values, his concience goes on the defensive. Intelligence is displayed in actions. With that I rest my case.
"this do-nothing slick used car salesman"
bwahahaha! he accomplished more by the time he was 30 than most Americans manage in their lifetimes........'do-nothing'....what a marroon.
Romney is a man with a vision, and all he touches turns to gold. GO ROMNEY!!!
It's time we get past our bigoted attitudes and consider each canditate on his own merits.
I have never voted for a man or woman because they are either Republican or Democrate, I have always tried to look at the candidate to see if they could do the job. If Mitt Romney could pull this country back from the financial or moral ruin that we seem to be heading down, we should seriously consider him with his convictions. I don't think a party makes a man or a woman, but the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
Mitt Romney seems to me to be a person that could put this country back onto it feet again. We need a strong person to find real soultions to our economy, if he can do this and I think he can, he has my vote.
I would have voted the stellar Mitt Romney with the convictions he had as governor; that is, pro-equality and equal treatment for all. Now that he has turned his back on gay rights and flipped on many other issues as well, I find his pandering to the far right obnoxious. You do not have to be a far-right bigot to be a Christian or person of high morals.
It's evident to me that Mitt has the capability of really getting this country turned around in several crucial areas, but he cannot do it alone -- no president can! A president's power is limited. A president is only one part of the solution. If we can get Mitt elected, and give him a House and Senate with enough sensible people who can let go of their agendas and selfishness to get things done for their country, then this nation can be redeemed! Let's remember to take a serious look at who is running for those positions in our states! It would be such a shame to get this man elected, but tie his hands with more of the wrong kind of people in the House and Senate.
Go MItt!!! Marilyn.
What a refreshing batch of comments I just read. I hope that our "friend" CJJ will read them. You are SO misguided in your opinions of Mitt.
If he has a tendency to be "stuck in the 50's" it just might be because they were good times and generally people led good and moral lives back then.
Go, Mitt go. Wish I could vote in USA elections. :>(
As far as Mitt's stance on gay rights, nobody ever seems to get that, the reason he is accused of flip-flopping on that issue, is because he DOES believe that EVERYONE is entitled to be treated fairly under the law, including gays or any other "group" of humans! He was supportive of gays in Massachusetts, but when the issue became "marriage" of gays, he knew that was going too far. He DOES believe in their right to civil unions, and equal benefits that unions would afford them. He just draws the line at calling it "marriage", because that is a term and an instituition reserved for a man and a woman. He really never did a flip-flop, he just set a standard that he doesn't believe should be loosened. He stands-up and tells it like it is! He has principles and ethics, which is why, even with a wife with MS, he could not support embryonic stem cell research. How ethical is that! It has the potential to cure his wife of a serious disease, yet he cannot condone what he knows to be unethical (on which Ann, by the way, agrees with him). I am doing all I can to support Mitt for our president, because I KNOW he is the best man for the job, and I have a teenage daughter with MS. I pray daily for a cure, but I won't support embryonic stem cell research either!
I wish every American could see Mitt Romney as I see him and I never even met him. But to me because of his Faith and Works I know that he is a Good Husband, Father, and Citizen. And believes as I do because that We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. And also he believes in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; I again have never met him but if he was to fail those task now I wouldn’t vote for him. But he, will because I know this much and believe in him and his work ahead of him.
God Bless our future President who every he may be and God Bless our Nation
for we sorely need it these times of diversity and trials of the American way of life
which I believe in as did Washington and Jefferson believed and in the God they believed in
