The Bill Clinton factor in Iowa

By Jason Tuohey November 19, 2007 10:48 AM

A piece in Sunday's New York Times offers some insight as to the role former president Bill Clinton will play in Iowa as Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton ramps up her campaigning for the Jan. 3 caucus.

"Mr. Clinton is expected to concentrate on rural areas and smaller cities, where campaign aides believe that Mrs. Clinton needs a boost. (A sign on the office door of Teresa Vilmain, the state director of the Clinton campaign, says: “Hillary is needed in rural Iowa.”) Already, Mr. Clinton has helped recruit precinct captains and has worked to persuade small clutches of undecided voters, but aides say his involvement will increase significantly after Thanksgiving."

According to the same article, 38 percent of people likely to participate in the Iowa caucuses said Bill's involvment would make them more likely to support Hillary. However, 55 percent said the Bill Clinton factor would make no difference in how they voted.
