Wildmon endorses Huckabee

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor November 8, 2007 03:10 PM

The social conservative movement splintered a little more today when Donald E. Wildmon, founder of the American Family Association, endorsed Mike Huckabee.

"I feel that Gov. Huckabee understands the needs of our country and has the ability to lead us in meeting those needs," Wildmon said in a statement issued by the Huckabee campaign.

"Rev. Wildmon and I share the same values on faith and family, which are key issues for the Republican Party," Huckabee said in the statement.

The former Arkansas governor has been jockeying with other Republican presidential hopefuls for the favor of social conservatives, who have traditionally been a powerful constituency within the GOP.

This election, however, they have not unified behind one candidate because of concerns about the policy positions of some hopefuls and the electability of others. On Wednesday, the Rev. Pat Robertson, the high-profile televangelist, endorsed Rudy Giuliani. On Monday, Paul M. Weyrich, founder of the Moral Majority, endorsed Mitt Romney.
