Bill stumps for Hillary in Western NH

By Lisa Wangsness, Political Reporter December 4, 2007 06:43 PM

Bill Clinton hit the trail for his wife in New Hampshire today, hitting three liberal-leaning communities in the western part of the state -- Keene, a vibrant college town; Claremont, a hardscrabble former mill city; and Lebanon, which has profited from the Upper Valley's flourishing high-tech and healthcare industries.

Clinton arrived more than an hour late for his 10 a.m. speech at Keene State College (thanks to bad weather on the drive up from Boston, he said). But the crowd of 500 or so, most of them students, didn't seem to mind.

Reminiscing about his own first primary run in 1992, he recalled how shocked he was the day 400 people turned out in Keene to hear him speak.

"I thought, 'We might actually win this thing,'" he said.

But he quickly veered off memory lane to discuss his wife's candidacy, and in particular, her dedication to working families.

"As Hillary says, we can rebuild the middle class American Dream," he said, to applause.

Clinton said his wife would work to make college more affordable for young people, to provide healthcare for all and to strengthen the economy by investing in renewable energy, an industry that he said has the potential to put millions to work while also fighting global warming.

Clinton mostly stayed away from criticizing his wife's opponents, but he did dispute former Senator John Edwards and Senator Barack Obama's suggestions that Clinton would be a poor change agent because she is part of the very Washington establishment that needs fixing.

"But I argue to you, based on a lifetime of experience, that if you have spent as my wife has 35 years, not just as a public servant, but also as a private citizen, being a positive a change maker," he said, "that indicates that you'll be more likely to successfully execute change as president."

Clinton wound up his remarks by vouching for his wife's character. If he had to perform a task for the good of America, in a situation where his chances of survival were one in 1,000, and he could choose one person to go with him, he would choose his wife over all the great men and women he has come to know in his lifetime.

"Without any question, without a second's thought, of all the people I have ever known, I would take Hillary," he said. "And you should, too."

  1. STOP the Hillary attacks they make you all appear as childish as obama. Why not take a look at his record… well…that is, if you can find a political record for him…ask at Harpo productions. His only record is missing all important votes in the senate in his very short 104 weeks as a senator; he isn’t even qualified to be a senator let alone President!

Obviously these ole boys do not have a clue on the security threat bush and Chaney has caused our great country, we are at odds with most every large country, they will not talk to bush anymore, because he’s daddies spoiled little boy who the weak republicans gave him his way for the last seven years and now they are running and hiding from him. EACH republican shares the blame as bush and Chaney do for the state of this great country. The more obama speaks the more I hear a republican...

It’s also obvious from the last debate that John Edwards is fighting with anything he can think of, which we need a fighter; he’s only attacking Hillary though? As the good ole boys are sticking together, is he scared of oprah and obama? The reason you’re not hearing allot of negative about obama because OBAMA IS TOO INEXPERIENCED, there is no history, other than he doesn’t show up for work, he's missed almost all important senate votes? We already had a president the played instead of worked, look at this mess…What’s has this guy been doing? now he thinks he can use Oprah’s money to buy the Presidency? HE IS CRAZY as she is...

After recent weeks and the personal attacks, I strongly now see the best choice and my vote will go to CLINTON, we need her contacts as well as the great relationships President Clinton has with other countries and experience, to work together so that other counties will share the bill and world security. We do not have time to play politics with the likes of obama and rest of these guys…
John Edwards would be an outstanding VP for Hillary

CLINTON 2008, the true SMART choice

WELL SAID!!! Post By A Sad Woman,
Our friends and family are completely disgusted with Oprah, NEVER will watch her show or buy anything because she endorses it...
SHAME ON YOU OPRAH, allot of young women were influenced by you until now that you have showed just who you really are and not the persona you play on TV...This is nit a movie Oprah, OUR GREAT COUNTRY IS IN DIRE STRAITS and you try to manipulate the election...
How do you look in the mirror!
