Clinton: 'No surprises' in her past
JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Hillary Clinton hammered the argument that she is the most electable Democrat, but she declined an opportunity this morning to say that a candidate’s youthful indiscretions should never be an issue.
In the taping of an interview on "Iowa Press," an influential public television show, Clinton made the case that “there are no surprises” with her candidacy, because “I’ve been tested, I’ve been vetted” over 16 years in the political arena. “There won’t be anybody saying…why didn’t we think of that?”
Although it sounded like a jab at her chief rival for the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama -- who is far newer to the national spotlight -- she said at a press conference after the taping that she was only speaking about herself.
One of Clinton’s most powerful supporters in New Hampshire, campaign co-chairman Bill Shaheen, stepped down from his post on Thursday and apologized for having raised the issue of Obama’s teenage drug use, which the Illinois senator has been open about, as something that would invite Republican attack.
Clinton strongly condemned Shaheen’s comments and pointed out that she had personally apologized to Obama. The campaign should be about substantive issues, she said.
But when reporters pressed her to say whether she thought that a person’s teenage mistakes should not be a political issue at all, she wouldn’t go quite that far. “It certainly isn’t an issue in my campaign, and I said that very clearly to Senator Obama,” she said.
She also refused to rule out running negative ads, saying she’d swear them off if all the candidates agreed. But, she added, “I think contrasts are legitimate.”
The press conference was called to announce her endorsement by Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell.
Clinton was also asked on the "Iowa Press" show whether the recent appearance of her mother and daughter on the campaign trail and in TV ads was a sign of desperation as polls show Obama gaining ground in Iowa and in New Hampshire.
She said it was neither desperation nor a political ploy, and that she wanted Dorothy Rodham and Chelsea Clinton with her as much as the former’s age and the latter’s schedule allowed.
“I don’t know whether it affects voters but it makes me feel good,” she said. “It gives me a kind of a personal lift to have them with me.”

She's not my favorite, but she's SMART. Given that we haven't seen this quality in the White House for years, I'll take that. Further, as a former Southern Illinois Resident who has gotten to know Obama, he is just too green. Next time, though. He will be trampled and social desirability aside ("of course, I'll vote for a black person!"), this country will NEVER elect a black man. Not now. Not ever
What? Whitewater,Vince Foster, her missing billing records, the list is a mile long. She should be in jail. Google the Foster matter for one and any thinking person will agree she is just pure evil.
No Thank You Mama - I'm for Obama !
I doubt her statements that she had nothing to do with bringing up Obama's' past. Her comments that she's "been vetted" and "there are no surprises" are indirect references to a calculated ploy by her campaign to smear Obama, by raising questions about his character because of past use of drugs, something the she and Bill were on the receiving end of, when Republicans went after Bill because he used to smoke pot.
I'm frankly very surprised at how dirty they play; I think the ploy also demonstrates veiled racism.
This is dirty politics at its worst.

Prediction:
Iowa: Obama wins..by a few
NY: Obama wins..by a few more
SC: Clinton wins
NV: Clinton wins
Rest is Clinton...Smart people eventually figure it out; smart people aren't in Iowa or NH!
It's unfortunate that people can't simply comment on the content of the article, and instead throw around mindless unrelated criticism. These are the kind of people who voted twice for GW, and look where we're at now! For myself, it'll be refreshing to have Bush out, and someone else in the White House who can speak legibly in complete sentences. I think it's great that we have so many good Democratic and Republican candidates to choose from... there are 10 of them that I could envision leading our country better than GW.
If Senator Clinton has nothing to hide, then why won't she immediately release her records as First Lady?
I'm happy with either candidate, but Obama has the fire this country needs!
Give the woman a break! She stood by her man when most women would have pounced on him like a dog on a bone. She says she forgave him and that's enough for me. That's between them.. 15 years ago everyone was saying the wrong Clinton was running. NOW THE RIGHT CLINTON IS RUNNING !
Hillary Clinton will be a strong President, much stronger and by far more intelligent than present.

What does Bill's bimboism have to do with anything? Hahaha! My favorite bumber sticker actually is "Nobody died when Clinton lied" Who cares what one does in their bedroom... I am sick of this adminstration and I think Hillary is the most qualified and experienced person for the job!!!

If Hillary is so lily-pure, let her explain how she parlayed a $1000.00 investment into a $100,000.00 return in one year.
Party affiliation aside, the only candidate qualified to sit in the Oval Office after George Bush is Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico.
My favorite bumper sticker is: RUN HILLARY RUN placed on the front bumper.
#7: If Clinton wins all the other states, it will have nothing to do with the intelligence of the voters, but rather the exposure to the candidates. Clinton has huge exposure because of Bill. Obama is new, so people don't know about him yet. And a number of the others aren't as well known as Clinton either. If each person in the union had a chance to hear each candidate speak live, Clinton wouldn't be the one to win.

"No SURPRISES"? Are you kidding???!!! Have we forgotten MONICA? Hillary is still married to BILL ... remember? And if Hillary wins, does ANYbody think her "first GENT" has changed his leopard spots? What about the NEXT Monica?
Hey #12...it didn't happen in the bedroom. Bill hit on an intern in the Oval Office. If he were a Republican, he would have been run out of office and indicted on sexual harassment. As it is, he was "only" impeached for lying under oath about it. And before he was caught he sat there on TV wagging his finger at America and lying about it. Not everybody is ready to be a sucker about this. Bedroom indeed.

Before everyone used to see America as one of the best places to be on earth, now, most of the world sees America as having sadly, stupid people since they elected George W. Bush....So lets hope this same stupidity doesnt repeat. If you do get the chance to vote, vote with your prejudices about race and everything else aside, vote with your heart, vote for humanity ...
