Democratic debate in Boston called off

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 10, 2007 03:59 PM

If you're a fan of presidential debates, best get your fill this week.

The back-to-back face-offs in Iowa sponsored by The Des Moines Register -- the Republicans on Wednesday and the Democrats on Thursday -- will be the last ones before the Jan. 3 caucuses, barring one miraculously materializing.

That became clear today with confirmation from CNN that it has canceled a planned Democratic debate next Monday at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

"Due to the early scheduling of the Iowa caucuses, organizers decided to cancel the December 17th debate in Boston," CNN said in a statement. Politico and the library were also sponsors.

Of course, for those who have tired of the debates, the end can't come soon enough. The Democratic and Republican fields are each nearing double digits in the number of forums, and the candidates sometimes resort to the same stock phrases.

  1. Closeness of caucuses can not be the real reason. Boston Globe, if it had intergity, would get to the actual reason.

  1. Agreed.

This could have helped people make up their minds right before the primaries. I was looking forward to it.

  1. Good! I am glad there will be no more debates - I despise them. They do not give equal time to all candidates and the questions are beyond stupid often. Who the Hell are they to decide whom I get to hear and for how long?

  1. You have got to be kidding blaming the organizers for canceling this debate. This is just another example of why us being counted like cattle in polls and numbered like items on shelves to these candidates. Mass.,is just not a big enough State to be concerned about at this point and I for one want to hear an apology from each and every one of them, especially Obama, who I like, because Deval endorsed him. This is a disgrace and feels like something Mitt Romney would do, I'll bet he's laughing now..... we look like a joke. Why don't they have the time. What are they gonna do when they are in the White House to manage time ????? What , are they too tired !

  1. My comment about Obama ... was in reference to why he should appologize to the State of Massachusetts. I do not want comments as to why I am considering him as a candidate. I would rather stay on topic.
    Thank you.

  1. The State of Massachusetts should apologize to the rest of the nation for giving us Teddy" I can't see my own feet Kennedy" and John " I'm a war hero god damn it" Kerry.
