Democrats would beat Huckabee, poll says

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 11, 2007 10:30 AM

Mike Huckabee might be all the rage in the Republican presidential sweepstakes, but partisans might look askance at some numbers in one of two new national polls that put him in a virtual tie for the lead.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey says that if the former Arkansas governor wins the GOP nomination, he would lose to all three leading Democrats. Interestingly, the poll suggests he would be drubbed worse by the Democrats trailing in the national polls, CNN reported on its website this morning.

In a hypothetical matchup with Hillary Clinton, Huckabee would lose 54 percent to 44 percent. He would lose 55 percent to 40 percent to Barack Obama, with whom he shares a campaign message of optimism and hope. And Huckabee would lose 60 percent to 35 percent to John Edwards, with whom he shares economic populism and Southern roots.

Edwards would beat all four leading Republicans -- Rudy Giuliani, Huckabee, Mitt Romney and John McCain -- while Clinton and Obama would win against all but McCain, according to the poll.

McCain would defeat Clinton 50 percent to 48 percent, and McCain and Obama would be tied at 48 percent, the poll found.

The poll of 912 registered voters was conducted Thursday through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

  1. CNN was dubbed the "Corrupt News Network" based on how it ran the Republican YouTube debates in a story by the Los Angeles Times on 12/1/2007. I am an Independent voter who likes Huckabee and I take CNN's poll coverage with a grain of salt. By the way Huckabee is leading Hillary in a head to head match up of these two candidates in Arkansas polls.

  1. What a freaking joke Michael Patterson. Huck is leading Hill in a head to head match up of these two candidates in Arkansas polls? Um, and this is news? Lets think "Big Picture" and "Out of the Box". Do you really think that a poll in Arkansas means anything???

Huck means loss. The Dems will eat him for lunch (and breakfast and dinner too).

  1. CNN is not worth much when evaluating Republican and Democratic issues because they have a democratic agenda. They will always come out on the side of the Democrats.

  1. Well that's really accurate! I do believe Huckabee can't win and that's because there are too many middle of the road voters who aren't as conservative as him. But it says McCain would beat Clinton. I don't buy that! McCain is old and that alone hurts him. Also Edwards would beat all four?? Hardly! Edwards would have trouble beating Guiliani and Romney for sure. Polling 912 people means squat for me.

  1. The MSM is missing the big story about the races: Edwards beats all Republicans more than any other Dem candidate does.

It's just strange this factoid doesn't get any play.

  1. For a candidate so new to the national scene Huckabee is doing very well in head-head polls. Other national polls have 60% no opinion on him. If he wins Iowa, SC, Florida and does well in NH and Nevada, THEN do a head to head with Hillary/John/Barack and see the Democrats squirm.

  1. Huckabee is a breath of fresh air among a group of postmodern chameleons trying to stay afloat in a sea of like minded liberals with many self instituted gods. His nomination will mobilize many who understand the importance of a mindset which is anchored in something more robust than Oprah and Bill.

  1. Huckabee will implode once his views are better known. Republicans are desperate for a new face and on the surface Huckabee can be very charming and sincere, but once his dirty laundry is exposed, the novelty will quickly wear off. The dirt on Huckabee is real and it will stick!

  1. You're all nuts - CNN is a right-wing corporate propoganda tool. Glenn Beck?

And Huckabee is exactly what the Republicans deserve - you reap what you sow.

  1. All politicians are corrupted by the big corporations. Don't think for a minute that any of these guys care the slightest bit for the middle class. It's all about the money.
