Ga-ga for Oprah
By Lisa Wangsness, Globe Staff
Barack Obama's appearance with Oprah Winfrey at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on Sunday night is shaping up to be one of the biggest campaign events in New Hampshire primary history.
Obama's campaign has already given away all the tickets for the 10,000-seat arena, campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said today.
But that's nothing compared to the crowd expected in Columbia, S.C., for a joint Obama-Winfrey rally on Sunday morning. Today, the Obama campaign announced it had moved the event from the Colonial Center, which Psaki said seats about 18,000, to Williams-Brice Stadium at the University of South Carolina, which has a capacity of more than 80,000, according to its website.
Winfrey and Obama will begin their tour in Iowa on Saturday, with stops in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Admission to all the events is free.
Political analysts are divided whether all the enthusiasm generated by Winfrey's star power will translate into actual votes for the Jan. 3 Democratic caucuses in Iowa and primaries Jan. 8 in New Hampshire and Jan. 26 in South Carolina.

Let's see what was it about a year or so ago when Oprah gave new cars to everyone in her studio audience? Now 80,000 people coming to see her campaign for Barak Obama in South Carolina. Does this give new meaning to the famous Herbert Hoover political quotation "a chicken in every pot and a new car in every garage?"
Obama's going to win Iowa, NH and SC.
I find it saddening to read of Oprah's campaigning efforts in support of Obama. I've had a good deal of respect for the things she's done over the years but have lost some of that respect for what she is doing now. In her own words she has said she never endorses a political or presidential candidate. Has she suddenly been overwhelmed by Obama's vast experience in international affairs, or his fantastic track record solving the hard problems his existing constituency faces everyday, or could it be his great many years of political success across party lines? Since he has none of these credentials, could it be that Oprah has finally decided to enter the throng of the entertainment world's political backers because Obama is the first black to seek the presidency? Some say her motivation is that he has fresh ideas, could that be because he has extremely limited credentials and experience or is it that no other candidates have any fresh ideas? I'm disappointed in Oprah, I wonder, if Obama was white would his ideas seem just as fresh and powerful? or would he be just another candidate not compelling enough to pull Oprah into a position she has strictly avoided until now? political campaigner!
