Huckabee rises to second in national poll

By Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor December 7, 2007 10:14 AM

A new national poll out today has Mike Huckabee in second place and hot on the heels of front-runner Rudy Giuliani among Republicans.

Huckabee has displaced fellow Southerner Fred Thompson in second, thanks to growing support in the South and among Christian conservatives, according to the AP/Ipsos survey.

Huckabee has support from 18 percent, compared to 26 percent for Giuliani, 13 percent for John McCain, and 12 percent for Mitt Romney. Thompson has fallen to fifth with 11 percent.

The poll shows how fragmented the Republican race is nationally, with only one candidate anywhere close to backing of one-fourth of respondents. It also confirms the surge by Huckabee, whose genial style appeals to many voters and whose debate performances have won him plaudits. Since his rise, however, he has come under heavy criticism for his tax record as governor of Arkansas and for his role in advocating for the parole of a rapist who killed a woman after he was released.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton continues to lead, but has fallen back below the symbolic 50-percent barrier. She leads Barack Obama 45 percent to 23 percent, with John Edwards at 12 percent.

The poll, conducted Monday through Wednesday, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points among Democrats, and 5.1 percentage points among Republicans.

  1. The 50% number is mainly important and significant when only 2 people are running. Being over 40% with 3 or more are running is pretty good.

  1. Mike Huckabee is the only candidate able to shake up the way we spend money. (I love his new tax system - NO IRS). He's a man of his word - so we can expect, with confidence a secure boarder. He's the only Governor I know that balanced the budget every year he was in office. Look at his governors record - Mike's Results Cannot Be Denied - And that Scares the Establishment. Why? Because they won't be able to conduct themselves anymore in a way that racks in the money. . Romney will continue Bush's desire to woo Big Business'. Huckabee will keep money in communities and on Main Street USA...................................

Huck Has My Vote Because I Want Change!

  1. Huckabee is the first candidate who isn't ashamed to say what he "really" believes and has direct answers. He doesn't seem to be guided by the polls as are some of the others

  1. Huck is not going to win the election. The guy has barely raised over 1.3 mil... Get real folks. Ron Paul has over 10.5 mil and will probably finish over 14 mill this quarter. The press hates to admit it but Paul is the leader.

  1. Huck's FairTax - A fringe idea, NOT

Renown economist, Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff, has stated (9/26/2006),

"Yes I think [the U.S. is bankrupt] because if you look at our long term fiscal obligations and compare them with our tax receipts that are projected to come in, you end up finding the difference in present value is equal to $63 trillion. This is according to an update of a U.S Treasury study. So it is not an academic study but rather a government study.

"To come with $63 trillion in present value, you would have to have an immediate and permanent roughly 70 percent hike in federal corporate and personal income taxes. Alternatively you could immediately double the payroll tax. So we are talking about gargantuan adjustments here, huge problems that we are facing, and a lot of this has to do with the fact that the society is aging. We are currently facing 33 million people over 65. But when the Boomers retire there will be about 77 million people over 65. And we are currently handing out per old person roughly $30,000 on average in Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid benefits. But when the Boomers retire we are going to be paying them a lot higher level of benefits because these benefit levels continue to grow much more rapidly than wages per worker. So think about 77 million Baby Boomers getting roughly $40,000 per head, and you see the magnitude of the problem. We are talking trillions of dollars. $44,000 times 77 million is a very big number. It is in the trillions, A couple trillion dollars a year in obligations. So I do not think it is an exaggeration to say the country is bankrupt."

Kotlikoff believes that Huckabee's FairTax is the vehicle to derail economic meltdown.

And Kotlikoff is in good company.

  1. Huckabee isn't perfect, but GOSH he's good! I think he'd be a very bold leader. I do think he should handle this parole story as he would if it happened in his own church. Take responsibility, repent, and ask forgiveness. There's too many good things in this man and his positions for me to turn away from him over some disagreements. I want an honest leader who's not sold out to anyone. Just don't be suprised that some significant "conservative" forces will adamently oppose him for economic reasons.
